I haven’t been paying much attention to spring training. It’s hard not to, with all my feeds on Twitter. Yet, I did tune into some action this past Sunday.
I tuned into see Jon Lester having problems with base runners again. I also saw him having a tough time fielding his position. This is what we were used to seeing from him last year. Is this a glimpse of what we will see from him this year?
I hope not. I can’t figure out why we didn’t hear of these issues before he came here. He just didn’t forget how to throw to 1st base, did he? And with all the money we paid him… Don’t get me wrong, I liked the move. He was OK last year, and should be much better this year. Key word is should. Now there’s talk of a bone chip in his elbow? Hey, I bought my son his jersey, for his 1st Cubs jersey ever… he has to do something for us. I’d be happy if he could at least attempt a pickoff throw to first without screwing it up.

Heyward with a hit. Rizzo with a sac fly to the wall. Soler with a blast out of the park. This offense could be scary. And by the way, where is Soler going to play? It is kind of crowded in that outfield. Soler is an interesting one too. His bat is electric. We saw how he did in the postseason last year under pressure. There is no questioning his offensive abilities. Then we get to his defense and baserunning. Then we get to some issues. If the bat is what will get him into the lineup, it’s his defense that will keep him out. Personally, I like Schwarber behind the plate. I guess they’re going to try to use him as Jason Hammel’s personal catcher. So once every 5 days it will be Kyle behind the plate… I guess that’s a start.
As far as the White Sox go, it was the Adam LaRoche saga for a number of days. Now that it has died down a bit, the other big storyline for the Sox this preseason comes to surface. It’s their power numbers. I think it was 37 home runs in 21 games… something like that. That’s what the focus should have been all along. They’ve looked solid. Let’s see what happens when the season starts. Will they keep it up?
Are we getting glimpses into the regular season? What should we take from spring training? I’m not taking much personally, but counting down the days until it’s over. Opening day is coming soon.

Lester will have a bounceback year for the Cubs leading them to the World Series. I predict 18+ wins. Schwarber should catch unless he really is such a liability behind the plate. The Cubs are deep enough to get everybody playing time, and I think Maddon will make it all happen so that everyone is happy. Bring on Opening Day!
