Back to our newest feature for a day… As the calendar turns to 1991, the Bulls look to build on their strong December and their current 20-9 record. We didn’t know at the time, but 1991 would be a very special year for this Bulls franchise.
It had been a great, yet rough couple years leading up to this. The Bulls had established themselves as a very good up and coming team, mostly due to Jordan. Yet, they fell short time and time again in the playoffs. It definitely wore on MJ and his mates. If you haven’t read it, and you want to know the true story of these Bulls, the Jordan Rules is a pretty good place to start. The competitive MJ pushing for greatness, a new coach with a new philosophy, and a supporting cast finally growing up; it was a mix that lead to an up and down ride. Sam Smith captured it all really well. In fact, I think after today, I’ll have to refresh my memory with some of the great stories of this inaugural title run. For now, we go back to January 1991…
And speaking of MJ… how great was he? For his career, he would average 30 points a game. He was the model of consistency; he rarely had a bad night. To average that many points, and his last 2 years in Washington brought this down, over 15 years in the league, was really special. What this meant, was that every time you tuned into the Bulls during his career, you would see him have a good game… just about… every… time. Taking an excerpt from any portion of his career, except those last 2 years, you would find the same thing. Take for example this 13 game stretch in January 1991.

His scoring was slightly declining since that 86-87 year where he averaged 37.1 ppg in 82 games played… @ 40 minutes per game!!! Something else that was pretty amazing, was the number of minutes MJ consistently played over his career. You wonder why some of us feel the way we do about NBA stars feeling the need to rest nowadays…. the great one NEVER rested. Over his career, he averaged 38.3 minutes per game, and again, this slice of games was no different. 38 minutes to be exact. Here was a guy who constantly pushed it. He tried to run that 100 yard dash every single game… preseason, regular season, or postseason. He always brought his A game. You wonder why some of us don’t respect this current generation of players as much; us “old-timers” who say none of these current players could stack up…
Yes it was a different time, but you played as many minutes as you needed to win the game. You think MJ ever asked to come out… or better yet, to skip a game??? We all know some of his best performances came when he wasn’t physically at 100%. The Bulls needed him every single one of these minutes….every single one of these games. Yes, the supporting cast began to come into their own, especially this magical season, but MJ never wavered. His scoring dipped a bit from that high water mark, but you could always pencil him in for 30 points a night & 40 minutes per night; a nice luxury for any coach to have.
As for the team’s record that month, it was 9-4. Breaking it down a little further, 5-0 at the Stadium… the original madhouse on Madison, and 4-4 on the road. A good month nonetheless. As MJ’s competitive fire burned hotter, as Phil pushed his philosophy, as Pip and guys raised their game, the Bulls were coming to a crossroads; they were coming to a boiling point. As this team was about to burst at the seams, either failing miserably again, or succeeding at the highest level, they were about to embark on one of the best stretches of basketball of all time; a sign of things to come for many years. As the calendar turned to February, this Bulls team would rip of an impressive stretch of basketball. At 29-13 they were already on pace for another 50 win season; after this next 2 month stretch, they would shoot higher than that, and prepare themselves for that successful burst. This year, 1991, would be a very special year for the Bulls, and it had just begun.

29-13 for those 91 Bulls as they just crossed the halfway point in the season. Their play at the Stadium was awesome and playing and winning on the road would soon follow.
Speaking about playing on the road, Jordan drew fans wherever he played. That was one of the greatest things about MJ. Whether it was practice, preseason, regular season, playoffs, Olympics, or otherwise, he always brought his A game. He never took nights off. He knew people were coming to see him play and wanted to make sure they left happy and awed. That is something missing from this group of stars. They take games off to rest or have minute restrictions. You remember how MJ felt about his minute restriction when he came back from his ankle injury. If he was able to walk, he played, and he put on a show for all to see. You never had to worry about MJ being a late scratch. He loved playing the game, both at home and away. When the GOAT feels that way, it trickles down to everyone else. If he busts his ass in practice, you sure as hell better follow, and that is what his 91 Bulls started to do.
