March 3, 2016: Blinders

All I want to see is Chicago sports.  I haven’t always been like that.  I have appreciated other teams, other sports, besides my Chicago teams that play football, baseball, basketball, and hockey.  Maybe because of a lack of time, but I don’t really care about anything else sports related.  I guess you can say I have my Chicago blinders on.

You really can’t even say that, because it’s not even all Chicago teams.  I don’t care in the least about the Chicago Fire.. am I supposed to?  Windy City Bulls, Chicago Wolves, Rockford Ice Hogs, Chicago Sky… I mean, I guess I would support them, but don’t care.  This even comes into play with my choice of baseball team in Chicago.  Because I am a Cubs fan, I really don’t care that much about the Sox.  It just is what it is.

It’s even worse when it comes to other teams… good, great teams at that.  Like the Warriors for instance.  I hear this stuff on the radio and get these text messages… the Warriors are so great.  I go out of my way to watch them play.  Blah, blah, blah…  I don’t.  I don’t care.  Nothing against them, but I’m not going to watch them play.  I did last night, but there was a reason for that….  to root against them of course, since they were trying to tie the Bulls home winning streak of 44 games.  It didn’t work.  I found myself yelling at Durant and Westbrook because they sucked, and found myself getting mad before I nodded off.  Chicago blinders see.

I won’t just sit down and watch another basketball game… same goes for hockey too.  It’s Bulls and Blackhawks or nothing.  I may tune into a playoff game to root against Cleveland or some other team I hate, but that would be it.  Baseball and football are different stories… somewhat.

I don’t mind watching another baseball game.  It’s actually a lot less stressful than watching the Cubs.  Yet, I don’t make a point to do this either.. last year’s World Series was the first I’ve tuned into in a while.  I used to watch every football game every Sunday, but those days are long gone.  Now, I just want my Bears game, that’s it.  The Sunday PM game doesn’t matter.  Sunday night, Monday night, or even Thursday night, are not priorities.  I will flip them on, but only if there’s nothing else going on…. or if my fantasy week result depends on it.

That’s why I don’t like ESPN any more either.  They’re all about national… oh wait, worldwide stuff.  I’m all about local.  Out of a 60 minute SportsCenter, I could do without 55 of them; so I don’t watch.  I don’t care to see some great team or great players… trying to think of the last time I cared about that.  Can’t recall…  Now there are certain other events I will get into… March Madness coming up is the best, a bit of World Cup when it’s time, I like the Olympics… but day to day, nah.

So who cares what is going on outside of the Blackhawks, Bulls, Bears, and Cubs?  I’ll give you the White Sox if that’s your choice of baseball team, and since it is baseball, I will give them some love.  But that’s it.  Don’t care about the Fire opening day.  Don’t care about the Warriors quest for history.  Don’t care about a Monday Night game between the Titans and the Jaguars, or even Cowboys and Steelers.  Give me one of my teams or don’t give me anybody.  I don’t mind the blinders; they fit me just fine.

The only real reason to watch any other sport or team that is not Chicago is if you have money on or against them, or for fantasy purposes, which at the end of day usually involves money, too. March madness is around the corner, and that means brackets, final scores, and betting if you wish. It is a great time of year and would be even better if we could be in Vegas…basketball, betting, gambling, and drinking…sounds good to me!
