Here I go again… I am the real live Uncle Rico when it comes to Chicago sports. I’m always reminiscing of the glory days. We just got done with the first “glory year” in my Chicago sports life, which was 1985… the team was the Chicago Bears… we know the rest. That brings us here… to 1991.
It’s a perfect time to talk about this; at least I think so. It being the 50th anniversary of the Chicago Bulls franchise. It being exactly 25 years ago that those Bulls captured their 1st NBA title. It being so sucky to watch the current version; it’s kind of like with the Bears. They suck, so we think back to when they didn’t. The Bulls are so frustrating right now, it’s time to give ourselves a mental break. It’s time to talk about another one of our happy places.
So a new feature is born. Obviously I won’t go game by game through the 1990-1991 NBA season, but I’ll touch on some highlights. Before then, I’ll talk about how the 1991 Bulls got to this point: the draft picks, the trades, the coaching moves, the tough losses. It’s pretty funny looking back on each of the BEST Chicago teams.. for the 85 Bears it was the 84 playoff loss to the Niners, for the present day Hawks it was the ass kicking at the hands of the Wings in 2009, for these Bulls it was the Pistons. They all had their tough losses before they reached their glory. Hopefully the Cubs had theirs last year… did the Sox have that? I don’t quite recall…
These Bulls were dragged through the mud. They kept trying to reach that pinnacle, and kept getting beat down. Thankfully, the team wasn’t broken up; we did lose a coach in there…and gain a pretty good one. This coaching change worked out… kind of like Savard for Coach Q. Thankfully, we didn’t have any major injuries besides Jordan’s broken ankle before the Bulls got good. We didn’t have to deal with our stars missing a lot of time… the core of the team grew together with MJ, and with a few additions, became the start of a dynasty.

Are you ready? Where were you in 1991? What the heck were you doing? For me, I had just graduated grammar school in 1990… the Simpsons were on our class t-shirt, and Yesterday by the Beatles was our class song… go figure. I don’t think I had my first job yet… I think that happened the following year. I turned 14 years old before the start of the 1990 season… I remember how the previous season ended.
It was my grammar school graduation & party. When I walked back into the house from the ceremony, I remember the Pistons beating up on us in the decisive game 7 in Detroit. I remember the icepack on the back of Scottie Pippen’s neck, which I later found out was not because of Mahorn or Laimbeer, but a migraine headache… go figure. I remember the Bulls losing for the 3rd straight time to the Pistons; this time by 19 points in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. My graduation day was ruined.
That summer I was taken to a Dude Ranch… no, not the type up on Belmont and Halsted, it was a real, live Dude Ranch in Colorado that my aunt took me to as my graduation gift. Yeah, I got to go hiking in the Rockies, ride horses in a rodeo type competition, and eat Rocky Mountain oysters (sounds better than what they really were…breaded cow balls…mmm mmm good). It was a great time. We also played basketball, both on a dirt patch and in the pool. One of the families that was there was from right outside of Detroit. One of the sons was my age. Yeah, we battled one on one, MJ vs Isaiah every day that week. He kept reminding me how we couldn’t beat the Pistons, and I kept saying this was the year we would finally do it; we were both right.
Let’s take a walk back. Let’s get aboard that time machine. Let’s talk about the 1991 Bulls, and how they became the start of a dynasty. Let the new feature begin!

Should be a nice new topic to blog on. How can you go wrong blogging about any of the Chicago championship teams, especially those with the GOAT, MJ, on them. This particular team being the very beginning of the Bulls dynasty that would bring 6 nba titles in the 90s. I, too, did the dude ranch trip, a few years later of course, and minus the cow balls…hahaha. It was a great experience being on horses and in nature all week. Looking forward to reliving some great Bulls games and moments on the road to title number one! Let the Bulls dynasty begin!
