February 7, 2016: The Other Super Bowl Bears

posted in: Bears | 2

All this talk about the 85 Bears. 24 dedicated blogs to be exact on this website for the 30th anniversary feature.  Well the Bears did make 2 Super Bowls in their storied history. Yeah, we only won one, but what about that team that made our 2nd Super Bowl appearance.

I think of that team today, on Super Bowl Sunday 9 years later. Yep, it’s been 9 years already. So much has happened in that time…or so much hasn’t happened since then, depending how you look at it.  For me, I’ve moved back to Chicago, bought a condo, got married, had a child, and got a new job…yeah, a lot has happened.  For the Bears, it’s been 2 playoff games and 1 playoff victory since then…yeah, a lot hasn’t happened.  But back to 9 years ago…

Was there ever a better way to start a Super Bowl?  I flew back from LA for the proceedings, headed back to my old apartment where my buddy still lived, and gathered with all the troops to watch the Bears battle the Colts. The drinks were already flowing, and we each had full beers as the game began.  And there went the kickoff…and there went Hester…and there went the beers. All that talk about would they kick to Hester…who had 2 kickoff return TDs, 3 punt return TDs, and 1 missed FG TD that year. The man was ridiculous. If any return man should be in the Hall, sorry Brian Mitchell, it should be Devin. So he took that ball from the 8 yard line…yeah, you’re damn right I watched that again today..headed right, made one nice cut, and he was gone.  We were all jumping around, yelling, screaming, spilling beers everywhere. This was OUR game!!!  Well, for that first kickoff return it was.  That was a pretty damn good year overall.

For all the comparisons to the 85 Bears that are inevitable, the one thing that was better was the special teams and Hester. The one thing that was worse, was the offense.  The one thing that was pretty damn good, not better, but pretty damn good that year, was the defense. It was a different defense to be sure, but they were fast, they caused a ton of turnovers, and they played well together. Urlacher, Briggs, Brown, Tillman, Vasher…Tommie, Alex, Ogunyele…they were pretty special in their own right. They were responsible for many great memories that year. That team brought the Bears back to the national scene.  Remember those national TV games that year?

You also have a much wider variety of medications and if you have a prescription for scheduled drugs then you can actually order Sildenafil (loved this cialis order levitra) & practice it devoid of any indecision. We destroyed Seattle the defending NFC champs, we made history in Arizona on Monday Night, beat the Giants with the help of Devin’s 108 yard missed FG return, and beat the Rams when Devin brought his 6th back to the house.  Yes, we did lose to the Pack on New Year’s Eve that year on national TV; I remember that game. I remember the other loss to New England in Foxboro; that was a great game though. It was supposed to be the Pats Bears Super Bowl rematch that year, until they blew it to the Colts. I also remember the loss to the Dolphins (again?!?) at home which ended our undefeated season in week 8.  It’s crazy how those losses stick out.

But those wins do too, at least in this 13-3 season.  The playoffs were pretty great too. Yeah, we eked by the Seahawks, but the Saints NFC Championship game…one of my favorite ever. They’ll be showing that one in a special on Comcast this week.  It’s not the 85 Bears, but they were pretty awesome too. The main reason why they’re not as revered, well there’s many, but the main one, is that they didn’t win it all.

Yeah, for all the wins and celebrations that year, losing a Super Bowl is the worst; there were some pretty depressed folks and a lot of tears in those beers after the Colts defeated us.  That pain ranks pretty high up there. Still, I thought about them today…the last time our Bears reached the promised land.

When will we reach it again?  When will this day reach that peak level again, to see our Bears on the biggest stage?  It can’t happen soon enough, heck, I’ll take another playoff appearance for starters.  I guess you could say we’re due. Yes, for all the great history of the Bears…all those NFL championships, we’ve only got 1 Super Bowl in 2 tries.  I’m ready to give it another shot. I wonder when they’ll be ready. Here’s hoping it’s really soon. Bear Down always!  Yep, I’m pulling a jersey out today…Butkus, Payton, or Urlacher?  That’s the choice for me today…Can’t go wrong.

That Bears squad had a D that was fast and ball hawking. Too bad the offense wasn’t that great because the D and hester on special teams were the Bears offense some games.
Hester taking that opening kickoff was amazing! Such an awesome beginning followed by a sombering reality the rest of that super bowl…ouch!
The nfl is much better when the Bears are winning. Hopefully, the Bears are on a quick road back to winning, making the playoffs, and winning a SB in the next few years. It is hard to watch the 85 Bears special on espn and not wonder why it does not seem important to this Bears franchise to win consistently. How can such a storied franchise be ok with 1 SB win in the last 50+ years…completely unacceptable! Turn it around fast, get back to being monsters of the midway and world, and BEAR DOWN!!!

Bears have to take a lesson from the Cubs, grow via the draft and smart FA and trade moves.
