It’s an anniversary of sorts today. 30 years ago today Da Bears won their one and only Super Bowl. In our walk down memory lane, we’re not quite there yet. One win remains for these Bears. One win to reach their first championship game since 1963. It’s been 22 years coming.
Think about that for a second. 22 years was such a drought back in 1985. Well, what about 30 years? That’s the current drought our Bears are enduring. But back to the game…the NFC Championship game…the 1985 version.
Were we worried back then? I’m sure. I still remember getting nervous before these games. The Bears were supposed to win…kind of like the Cubs the year before, or maybe the Sox the year before then. Certainly these Bears would come through for us… for all these fans waiting for a championship. It was that last Bears title that was the last one Chicago enjoyed period. No Hawks, Bulls, Sox, and of course, Cubs titles in that whole time. Glad I was only alive for a little less than half of that drought.
It was exactly two weeks earlier that their ticket would be punched. Vegas liked the Bears as 10.5 point favorites. This game would never be in question.

After facing the NFLs TD leader the week before in Joe Morris, and smothering him, the Bears faced another great back. Eric Dickerson was the challenge this week. Surely we weren’t worried about Dieter Brock. Well Dieter would only manage 66 yards passing on this day, while Eric ran for only 46. McMahon ran and threw for one. The Bears pitched another shutout. 24-0 was the final. That’s 45-0 in the playoffs. That’s not too shabby.
This game had a few of those epic moments. There was a season full of them. On this day, two pop to mind. The first was the 4th and inches Rams decision to go for it. Why not with Dickerson? Inches…come on. No brainer. So sure enough, he got the ball, and charged towards the line of scrimmage. Waiting for him in the hole, meeting him at the point, standing him straight up, stopping him dead in his tracks, cracking his helmet, was none other than Samurai Mike. A one on one tackle preventing one of the best backs in the league from getting a couple inches. There’s a reason 50 is in the Hall. I just wish that number was retired too.
The second is the one everybody remembers. That moment where it was official…when the joy began to overflow…when the tears of happiness began to flow. It was that “we’re going to the Super Bowl moment” that couldn’t have been more perfect. It was the defense responsible for this one, as Mother Nature helped etch this one in our brains. As Richard Dent corralled Brock, the ball fell to the ground. Wilber Marshall eventually scooped it up, and escaped the jersey grasp of Dickerson. He began to run towards the end zone with a pretty big escort in the Fridge… Otis was there following. That Mother Nature contribution…the snow had just began to fall a few minutes earlier. I had to YouTube it to see it again; one of those you could watch over and over. Yeah, I was tearing up. Like I said, it’s been 30 years since a Bears title.
So as the Patriots beat the Dolphins, the matchup was set for Super Bowl XX. 15-1 regular season. 45-0 playoff combined score. 1 game left. 22 years coming. Today was the day it happened those 30 years ago. We relive that moment next.

What a game, what a season! 45-0 playoffs! Bears D does the job like it had all year. Stopping dickerson, sacking dieter, snow, and wilbur’s scoop and score. Bring on the pats…does it really matter who?
Happy Anniversary 85 Bears…greatest of all time!
