January 7, 2016: Then There was Six

On Thursday night, the Bulls held serve in the winning streak battle against the Blackhawks.  They increased their winning streak to six games with a win over the Boston Celtics.

I thought the Celts were decent.  Their coach was not there due to leaving the team to be with one of his ex-players from Butler who is battling cancer. That’s pretty cool; there are bigger things than basketball. They did miss him though. They were also down Avery Bradley.  Still, that team sucked. Marcus Smart, Kelly Olynyk, Sullinger… Garbage. Isaiah Thomas has some skills I guess. They did beat us in Boston.  It was not to be repeated at the UC on this night.

Butler had another solid performance. I guess we’ve pretty much come to expect that from him. You know who else has been playing well?  Yes, Pau Gasol, but also Derrick Rose.  He’s averaging 19.6 points with a 49.4% FG percentage in his last 5 games. I’ll take that from here on out. That would mean a backcourt averaging over 40 points per game. Last year I was barking how great this backcourt could be, and that I would take them over Curry and Klay. Ok, ok, so yes, I am a homer, and yes, the Warriors boys did win the NBA title last year, but this Rose Butler combo would rank up there. Second best?

Bobby Portis continues to be free. How will the rotation look once Noah returns?  He’s coming back in the next couple games, and I love Jo, but when you’re riding a six game winning streak, you don’t mess with much. You ride this out. Jo will have to be a part of the rotation again somehow.

So are we getting excited about this team now?  Are the early season struggles behind us?  I’ll say yes and no to both. Of course I’m excited to see the Bulls play well, but we’ve been here done this right?  We’ve had the best record in the East for two straight years with nothing to show for it.  There will come a time to show and prove. And this team will lose again…yes, it’s hard to believe, but it will happen..maybe even a losing streak or two.  That will be when this team’s mettle will be tested again. That, and another Rose injury…

I did say he’s been playing great, and I’m happy for him and us, but…you know it’s bound to happen. Probably, hopefully not a serious one, but he will miss some chunks of time as we go through the 82 game slate. That’s almost a given at this point unfortunately.  But we didn’t seem to skip a beat this last little chunk. Are the Bulls in a position to do this without Rose and Noah?

To that I say no. Everybody will be needed full force if we want the story of this Bulls team to end differently come May and June.  Until then, let’s keep building this streak. Friday night is next for the United Center?  Did the Blackhawks hold serve too?
