December 14, 2015: Cheering Up

posted in: Cubs | 1

I was debating on what blog to write next. Should I stay in depression mode after this latest Bears failure and write about week 13 of the 1985 season, or talk about the Cubs offseason which definitely has me smiling?

I was going to stay in the same mode, but decided against it.  It’s time for some cheering up; let’s talk 2016 Cubs.

I can’t remember being this excited about an offseason.  I wasn’t THAT devastated after the playoff loss to the Mets.  I almost felt like losing in the playoffs was a necessary evil for this Cubs team; something they had to experience before taking that next step.  So I never got too down, and started thinking about next year almost immediately.  I knew it was going to be an exciting year, especially after the moves Theo and company were going to make.  What would those moves be?

I thought we were getting Price.  That’s who I wanted, but it obviously wasn’t who the Cubs wanted.  If we ended up spending big money on another player, why not on Price?    But someone made a good counterpoint to that today, kind of like something I said previously.  Price wasn’t their guy.  If Maddon really wanted him, don’t you think they would have got him?  Makes sense, especially with the money spent afterwards.

So some bullpen bolstering started, including lefty Rex Brothers.  Necessary, but not flashy.  Next came Lackey.  Solid, but where’s the top pitcher.  Then the Zobrist signing, Castro trading.  I was very happy about that.  What came next was a surprise to me.

I wasn’t that hot for Jason Heyward.  I mean, his numbers haven’t been that great, we have young outfielders coming, and we still need a starter.  Yet, when the Cubs signed him, I got excited. Yes, 8 years 184 million is a lot of dough, but again, it was supposedly less than his best offer. The Cardinals at 200 million came up short…ha!  So is he worth it?  I heard about his high ranking WAR, you know, that wins above replacement stat.  I realized that he may be the best defensive RF in the game.  He has speed, and from seeing him in the postseason, appears to have the clutch gene.  His offensive stats aren’t that impressive overall, but you’re not supposed to pay for past performance, right?  At the end of the day, I guess he WAS the Cubs guy, and they believed him to be worth every penny.

Therefore it gets low estimated for each man from any financial setting to get a dissolvable for their inconvenience in a pocket good viagra mastercard way. We’ll see.  He does have some injuries in his past, and where exactly does he play?  CF?  I’d rather see him in RF where he’s best.  Then that still leaves CF open, and no position for Soler.  I’d like to see Jorge in LF and Kyle behind the plate.  Maybe that’ll work?

At the end of the day, the Cubs got better, and they may not be done.  They’re spending money which we all know they have; that money that they’ll have more of in the upcoming years. They’re loading up and making 2016 the year to get it done.

Like another buddy said today: “The Cubs will be the champs of the winter meetings. Will that however translate 2 champions in the fall of 16?” That is the real question.

Was winning the offseason a prerequisite to win it all?  I’d say no, but it sure doesn’t hurt.  The Cubs are here and aren’t going anywhere.  This wasn’t a one year fluke.  Yet, there’s 162 games that will help prove that.  First things first, win the division.  Opening day is less than 4 months away, and I’m sure I’ll say this another 10 times, but I can’t wait!  Go Cubs!

Cubs did what they had to do to get better. You never know how it will translate on the field or in the clubhouse, which is why you dont win championships in the offseason. Even still, the Cubs are improving and looking to do the same in 2016. They may not be done yet, and they will probably bolster up before the trade deadline in the summer, hopefully making their push for a 2nd consecutive postseason with a World Series to follow. I definitely like what I am seeing and am excited to see the product on the field. Not crazy about 2 ex-turd signings, but whatever it takes at this point. Like the silver and black saying, JUST WIN BABY! GO CUBS GO!!!
