December 1, 2015: Making the Effort

posted in: Bulls | 0

That’s all we really ask for of our teams. That’s all we can expect of any single player. That’s the least we can do as fans.

I always wonder why people show up late to games, but on Monday night at the UC that was me. I’m all about making the effort to arrive early…sometimes it’s not possible. Getting that text at 6:31 with an available last minute pair of tix for me and my boy, I was all over it.  It’s great to be on that list for these last minute opportunities; it is very much appreciated brother-in-law. So all of a sudden, it’s Bulls Spurs at the Madhouse on a Monday night.

The Bulls certainly did not disappoint. Speaking of effort, they definitely brought it, unlike the last game in Indiana. For all the negative talk about the Bulls, they’re currently at 10-5; not so bad considering the Circus trip is in the rear view. Another nice stat I heard:  Bulls are 5-0 after a loss. That’s right, so not one single losing streak for the Hoiberg Bulls. I like that in them.

Back to the game, it was good to see Joakim play well. 8/11/7 is the kind of line we were used to for a while there. On top of that, he made 2 nice drives to the hoop that brought the crowd alive.  Rose didn’t have a great game, but with only 1 turnover, and a mini stretch of 3 buckets in a row, he reminded us of what he could do when he’s right. Question is, is he right?  Will he ever be right again?

It makes sense that Jimmy says he’s not right…sort of banged up.  Kawhi Leonard made some impressive moves against him; that guy has got some skills. He, along with Aldridge who killed us for years with Portland, almost got them the W. But the Bulls held on…barely.

Down the stretch it was first Jimmy then Derrick come up empty from the outside. Take it to the rim boys!  Jimmy finally listened and put us up 3 with 2 FTs after a nice drive to the hoop to give us what would be the final score.  Gasol had a nice block late, and though he missed a bunch of free throws, at least he made one when it counted. He also recorded another double double; that should never get old.

It was a total team effort.  Without Hinrich and Brooks, McDermott, Snell, and Moore made nice contributions.  Taj even had one of his patented dunks on a putback to bring us to our feet.  I do have one small complaint.  It’s about the choice of songs after the Bulls went up by three with ten seconds left.  It’s a catchy song, and I do like it, but It’s only the Bulls is not an end of game about to win song.  Play a crowd rocker…one of those go to songs to keep this party going.  It’s like there was a weird silence as that song started getting revved up at the best moment of the game.

What matters was the end result and the effort that got us there.  So just because of a dud here and there, don’t forget who we’re dealing with here.  And just because you see a father with his son make an exit with 10 seconds left, don’t assume it’s because we’re trying to beat traffic.  When my 3 year old has to go, he has to go.  For the record, I did quickly pause to see the last couple misses and final rebound.  A for effort all the way around.  Go Bulls!
