What a couple days it has been… it’s definitely been a great time to be a Chicago sports fan.
The Bulls and Blackhawks both started their West Coast circus trip last night. Unfortunately, I had fallen asleep before any of the finals were in. It was 3-2 Blackhawks when I was last conscious, and the Bulls were up by double digits. Checking the results this morning, I was happy to see both came away victorious.
Patrick Kane extended his point streak to 14 games, which ties the longest of his career. After crushing the Flames in the last home game on Sunday, the first game of the six game road trip began in Edmonton. The game went to OT where Hossa ended it. But the story was Kane and his Russian twin, Bread Man, as he’s affectionately known. After reading through the game recap, Kane and Panarin have accounted for 37 percent of the Hawks scoring this season; that’s pretty damn impressive. Kane continues to lead the league in scoring, while Panarin is making us forget all about Brandon Saad. The Hawks are heating up… winners of 4 of their last 5 with a date scheduled in Calgary on Friday. Keep rolling boys.
The Bulls meanwhile won their 4th in a row. No Derrick Rose no problem. We’re pretty used to playing without him, and Jimmy really seems to shine then. I’m not sure how good that dynamic is between Derrick and Jimmy on the court, but Buckets steps up when DRose is not around. As I mentioned, this happens a lot. Who knows how long he’ll be out? The whole west coast trip is my bet.

Our next step is Golden State on Friday. There’s all this talk about them beating the 72-10 1996 Bulls record… pump the brakes people. I was driving home the other day when I heard an astounding stat. Of course, we lived through that magical year, but I didn’t remember that the Bulls were 41-3 in February. 41 and 3… Phenomenal. Talk to me in about 30 games Golden State. I’d love for the Bulls to give them their 1st loss… defend our record boys!
The final component of the clean sweep happened earlier in the night when Jake Arrieta was named Cy Young award winner; I was awake for that one. Rookie of the year, manager of the year, and now, Cy Young… the Cubs cashed in on all 3 individual awards we were up for. Of course, there is still one trophy that remains… the one that we haven’t seen since 1908. There is definitely some unfinished business for the Cubs going forward, starting with next year. Big difference this year… they won’t be sneaking up on anybody. Already the odds on favorite to win the World Series, how will we handle the expectations? Then there’s all that talk about Sophomore slump…. we have plenty of 2nd year players taking the field next year. How will the league adjust to us, and more importantly, how will they adjust to the league.
These are all questions that we can debate for months… a little less than 4 months, before spring training begins. For now, we’ll ride that west coast trip with the Hawks and Bulls. I’ll be trying to stay awake. I will be awake on Sunday, for a big game on the lakefront. Let’s talk about that next…
