We just watched the 2015 Bears finish their first half of the season with a nice victory to bring their record to 3-5. This is where we left off with our 1985 season in review.
The Bears remained in Soldier Field after their Monday Night beatdown of Green Bay in week 7. They hosted another division opponent in week 8: the Minnesota Vikings. Five weeks earlier, these Vikings had our Bears on the ropes, before Jim McMahon forced his way into the game and led us to victory in one of the most memorable Bears games of all time. This time, it wouldn’t be so memorable.
There were no ropes in this one, unless you count the one we hung the Viqueens with. Jumping out early to a 10-0 lead after a McKinnon TD pass and Butler FG, the Bears never looked back. Yes, they did allow them to score… 1 TD, but that was it. The defense was on its way to holding opponents to 10 points or less in an impressive 14 out of 19 games. They turned the Vikings over 5 times in this one. They were all INTs: 2 by Wilber, 1 by DD, 1 by Ken Taylor, and 1 by Otis, which he returned for the Bears 2nd TD on this Sunday. These were some bad boys.
Ken Taylor is a mostly forgotten member of this team, or at least one of the least known ones. He only played 2 seasons in the NFL: this year with the Bears and the following with San Diego. He played in every game, mostly on special teams. This was one of his moments of glory during this famous run. There were a couple guys like this…

But back to somebody who we could never forget, and that’s Walter. Yeah, he scored the final TD, as the Bears defeated the Vikes 27-9. He rushed for over 100 yards again; now 3 straight games. We’ll keep reporting on this streak as the season goes on; hint- this streak will go on for a while. He was as solid as they come, but we all know that. That is why of course one of the biggest regrets of this season has to do with his absence from the score sheet on that Super Bowl sunday. We shall discuss that later.
For now, the Bears stand 8-0; halfway home to an undefeated season. Next on the agenda, the 2nd matchup of the season with the Pack; this time on their turf, Lambeau Field. I’ve never made it up there. I’m not dying to go… it’s definitely not on my bucket list, because I hate them, but it does seem like a pretty cool stadium. Speaking about hating the Packers, it was this upcoming game, week 9 of the 1985 season where this 9 year old first had those feelings.
Amazingly, I remember that game pretty clearly… but that’s a story for the next blog as this 30 for 30 on the 1985 Chicago Bears 30th anniversary continues. Now back to our regulary scheduled blogging…

Would love to go to lambeau when the Bears are kicking the cheeseheads in their mouth! It really sucks to hit the road and see your team lose. The 85 Bears took care of the cheese at home and in lambeau…kinda makes me sick to see those new commercials with ditka wearing packer gear. How could he agree to that? Maybe it’s just me. Sweetness was unlike any other…loved watching him play and checking out his old highlights. What a fantasy stud he would have been!
