So I’m trying not to dwell on the fact that the Cubs are down 2-0. I’m trying to remain positive that we can go out and beat their ace, just like they did ours, in Game 3 of the NLCS. I’m hoping that the return to Wrigley will spark back up the mojo that the Cubs had, and we win 3 straight. I’m trying…
For now, let’s talk about the other Chicago sports teams. I need some distractions from the drama just for a second. Let’s start with the Bears. Nice way to start that Sunday off boys. In a game they had in the bag, they blew it. They lost to the winless, pitiful franchise that is the Detroit Lions. Couple things I noticed that could have made a difference. The last possession before the Lions came down and scored the go ahead TD in regulation. The Bears called 3 straight runs right into the middle of the defensive line as they tried to milk the clock. I’ve seen this way too many times with Lovie and Trestman; I thought Fox had some balls. First of all, running up the middle was not working this game. Secondly, when we want you to run the ball at the goalline you’re passing, and now you choose to do this. Finally, OK, I’ll give you a run on 1st and 2nd down, but you got to come up with something a bit more creative on 3rd. Put your throat on the Lions neck; end the game. One first down essentially seals the deal. Play action, roll Cutler out, worst case, if he doesn’t have anything, slide in bounds and keep the clock going. Do you trust Cutler that little?
Then the fake punt that we blew…. but then, the timeout situation. Why did we not call timeouts when Detroit had the ball first and goal? I don’t get it. Another thing we’ve been used to seeing is the horrible use of timeouts. We wasted 20 plus seconds there. So when Detroit scored, and we were able to get down the field in 20 seconds to setup a field goal, wouldn’t it have nice to have an extra 20 seconds on the clock, and go for the end zone? We could have ended this in regulation and Cutler could have been the hero again. Nope, let the clock tick tick tick down, and then have to call one anyways due to an injury 20 seconds later. I don’t get it. And then that Cutler red zone pick…. OK, I’ll leave that alone, but isn’t there always an interception that he throws that haunts us?
How about those Hawks? How about those Hawks…. I haven’t watched one minute yet of the season. I saw them get whipped on the east coast trip, a la the Cubs in New York, by Philly and Washington. They did come back and take care of business at home vs Columbus. If it’s one team we don’t worry about, it’s the Hawks. I’ll be tuning in shortly…

The Bulls… they are in the preseason; I’ve tuned in for a little bit, and actually was in attendance at the UC against the Pistons. Wearing my Cubs hat and t-shirt with my Bulls jacket, my son and I wandered around the stadium as he loves to do. We did get to watch a lot of the game this time too though. I’m trying to start pointing him in the direction of staying in your seat during the game. He’s only 3, so we got time… And it’s preseason, so walking around the stadium is actually OK. The Bulls got clobbered that game by the way, losing by 20 plus I think after being down by only 1 going into the 4th quarter. Funny thing so far, is seeing Hoiberg talk about Derrick Rose’s injury… I bet Thibodeau is sitting back relaxing somewhere just smiling. That is getting really old…
This brings us back to the Cubs… oh yeah, the White Sox. I had the pleasure of watching Game 1 of the NLCS with some White Sox fans who were in true hating form. You know, those kind of White Sox fans that were rooting hard core for the Mets because they couldn’t stand to see the Cubs win. Yeah, those kind. I’m always up for a good back and forth with a White Sox fan, but not now… not in October… not in the playoffs. I am too focused on the Cubs to worry about that crap. We will try to avoid those situations for the rest of October, which hopefully lasts another couple weeks. I know, October does last a couple more weeks, but I want the Cubs to keep playing… yeah, you got it now.
So back to the Cubs… and back to the anticipation which is already building for Game 3. Again, not a must win, but pretty damn near close. Will Tuesday night be another magical night at Wrigley, or will it resemble the mortuary like it has in some past memorable, but forgettable playoff games? I’m trying to still have faith, and I do… I always do. It’s not easy, but there is no other choice for me. Tuesday night is almost here… no more distractions… time to play ball… let’s go Cubs!
