October 11, 2015: Bouncing Back

posted in: Cubs | 1

This is what good teams do.  Down 1-0 and still in St. Louis, the Cubs looked to avoid a 2-0 hole. The percentages and history were already against us.

The team that wins game 1 at home wins the series 70% of the time. That percentage goes up to 86% up 2-0. Meanwhile, the cubs are 0-11 when losing the first game of a series, or something like that, and had now lost 7 straight NLDS games. History and stats will be stacked up against us until we rewrite it. I hear this team has a lot of pens..

When I heard Schwarber was out of the lineup, I scoffed. Still pissed about the loss, now I questioned why Maddon was benching our best hitter through two postseason games. Bench Castro if anything.  I’ll stick to writing this blog.

Then, the game starts. Soler doubles in the first. Bryant and Rizzo now coming up with a shot to give us the early lead. It didn’t happen. Surely they’ll have to hit this game if we have a chance. I was wrong again. Bottom of the 1st, and Carpenter hits the home run to give the Cards the early lead.  I was pissed, and then he comes out for a curtain call. Excuse me?

Is this the Cardinal Way?  Curtain calls in the first inning. We saw it again later in the game too. Does every homer in the playoffs deserve a curtain call?  I think not. Dumb asses.  As the 2nd inning, we turned to the next chapter of the Cardinal handbook.

How to play defense. Wong showed how to smoothly turn a double play, sailing a throw into the dugout. Garcia showed us how to hold runners on as Austin stole 3rd.  Then Jamie showed us how to field a bunt.  Neglecting the easy throw to cut down the runner at the plate, he instead chose to throw to 1st base…or in the neighborhood. Firing it into right field is just textbook stuff. He then proceeds to give up 2 more runs off another bunt and infield hit, before showing us how to minimize the damages by serving up a 2 run bomb to mr soler. It’s no wonder why he then complained about stomach pains and was pulled out of the game.

Yeah, he looked good too. Another run tacked on, and it’s 6-1 cubbies. Thank you for showing us the cardinal way.

They shot themselves in the foot, and good teams take advantage of that. Oh yeah, maddon definitely forced some action with the small ball that gave us the lead. He pushed the right buttons again. How dare I question him.  Soler, Jackson, Castro all played a big part. Oh yeah, what about his choice to start this one. Not too bad. And the boys he brought in from the bullpen?  Zeroes. 6-3 win. Huge win.

One other play I have to mention was the stab by Russell at short. What a phenomenal play. The guy is lock down defensively. Yeah, he had the borderline error in Pittsburgh, but honestly, anything hit his way is money. Not a bad deal Theo.

So series tied, and we’re headed home.  Jake will be on the mound.  I like our chances in game 3.  Will his dominance come to an end at some point?  Maybe next year.  The bar has been raised so high, that when he allowed a few hard hit balls in Pittsburgh, a reporter asked him why his stuff wasn’t as good. He replied “not sure what game you were watching” as if a complete game shutout with 11 Ks in an elimination game wasn’t good enough. This is the expectation he has set.  Yeah, we’re expecting more of the same Monday night buddy.

Just a great, great win. We got one down there, now let’s try to not see the Arch again until next year.  I just hope Wrigley is ready for Monday Tuesday…hahaha.

Saturday was just another example of the Cubs bouncing back. They’ve done it all year. They just did it in the 2nd season. Now, keep focus, and get a run on Monday please. That’s all we may need. Go Cubs!

Love how the Cubs responded. Small ball, take advantage of turd errors, and great bullpen pitching. Bring it back to Wrigley tied 1-1 with the cy on the mound…we will take that every time! Wrigley will be crazy. Win game 3 and then end this team on Tue. Nobody wants to go back to redville.

    GO CUBS GO!!!
