October 8, 2015: Mojo Working

posted in: Cubs | 3

Whew!  The emotional rollercoaster has ended… for tonight.  What a fricking ride it was!

I was stressing all damn week.  I couldn’t wait until gametime.  We all knew that one team, a 97 win team or 98 win team would be going home after tonight.  We knew that those 30 games over .500 was great, but wouldnt be enough for one of us.  Gametime was almost here.

Then I started getting pissed.  Watching Comcast, seeing them show a highlight from 2003, when Hollandsworth was with the Marlins, scoring a run in that dreaded 8th inning in game 6; how the hell could they show this?  Tonight?!  And Kaplan was just sitting there?!  So I turned to TBS, and who did I see on the set?  None other than Dusty Baker.  Aw man, I had it.  The winner take all game that is about to begin, and I’m getting all this bad mojo?  What happened with that 10/7 date tonight meaning the 107 years since the Cubs have won one?  What about the 7:08 pm start time; 19:08 military time for the last year we won one?  Ok, screw it.  I really am going to do what I said I was going to, and listen to Pat and Ron tonight.  I did.  They calmed me down.

It was also calming to get that 1st inning run.  We knew then that would be enough for our boy; man, was he spectacular again.  The rookie Schwarbs didn’t blink and drove in a run on his first postseason at bat.  What came next was legendary.  He hit a ball out of the park a couple innings later that still hasn’t landed.  I mean, he slaughtered that ball… with the bat flip to boot, and the Cubs were up 3-0.  Now I’m really starting to feel good.

Then Fowler again, home run this time, a new daily double Fowler and Schwarber?  4-0.  Over right?  Well, the Pirates did get some runners on in the 6th, and after an “error” on Russell, the bases were loaded with one out.  I’m so glad that next ball found Addison again.  A hard hit smash right at him was flipped to Castro for the turn to Rizzo; jam escaped.  I was pumped.  The next emotion was about to kick in.

They plunked Jake.  An obvious play… bush league.  I love how Joe and Jake both stayed above the trash during post game interviews.  After all, we did just put this team in the rearview, and have bigger fish to fry, but I’ll still take a shot.  Sean Rodriguez… what garbage.  Front and center trying to throw punches… the same guy who didn’t even get his first AB before Hurdle pulled him.  Little frustrated bro?  Then punching the Gatorade cooler like a punching bag?  He’s dead to me.  And who else was yelling in the middle of it… Gerrit Cole.  Again, frustrated by your performance in a big time game; you didn’t have to go there.  OK I’m done, and after 3 phone calls at the time, I was done.  It was definitely earmuff time at the house.  But, we’ll revisit this one another day.  Let’s keep the positivity going.

Back to the game, and back to Jake.  He got in another jam, but with another outstanding play by a rookie, a double play was turned and we were 6 outs away.  Bryant picked it clean and started around the horn on none other than ex-Cub Aramis Ramirez.  Did you already book your flight home before the game Aram?  It looked like he barely got out of the box before the double play was completed.  Now we’re getting close.

But it is the Cubs, and it is the playoffs.  I’m sorry, but I’m not celebrating, not talking about the next round, the next game, the next opponent, until the 27th out is recorded.  Maybe this Cubs team is different?  6 outs later, the celebration began.  We had won 163 and were advancing to the NLDS.

Man am I wiped out.. but I have a smile on my face.  We’re not washing the jersey, not mine or my son’s.  We got the hat and glasses that we’ll be wearing from here on out.  We will be listening to Pat and Ron going forward too.  It’s time to settle in.  It’s time for more playoff baseball.

First test passed with flying colors.  This young bunch has definitely got their mojo working.  97 wins, check.  Playoff berth, check.  Playoff win, check.  3 more boxes to check.  11 more wins to be had.  Are we rolling with this or what?!?!

It feels damn good… and we’ve only just begun.  Friday we visit another familiar foe… a hated rival.  No win or go home.  Best of 5 this time.  It’s time to take on the 100 win cards for the first time ever in the postseason.  Like we don’t have enough reasons to be pumped…  Bring on the birds baby!  GO CUBS GO!
