October 6, 2015: One More Day

posted in: Cubs | 2

Still looking for that fast forward button…  The anticipation continues to build for this one game playoff between our Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates.  We’re down to about 34 hours….

I don’t hate the Pirates.  I think I’ve said this in previous blogs.  The Pirates are actually a team that I rooted for the past few years while the Cubs were occupying the basement.  I like a lot of their players.  Their outfield is stacked, they have a deep starting rotation, a crazy good bullpen, and what seems like a pretty good, old school manager in Clint Hurdle.  The city of Pittsburgh is very nice, and their stadium is really cool.  They’re not the media darling East Coast teams that we love to hate, nor are they the soft West Coast teams.  They are not perennial winners either.  I wouldn’t mind seeing them win the World Series…

There is one problem of course with all of the above, and that is that they play the Cubs tomorrow night… and because of that, I have to hate them, or at the very least dislike them.  Isn’t that how it’s supposed to be?  Once the game is on, the other team is the enemy.  Shouldn’t that be the same with the players?  Once they cross those white lines, they should be out for blood.  Too extreme?  I don’t think so.  This is how it should be when fighting for that same prize.  The competition and desire to win should fuel this intensity between teams on game day, especially on a game day when one game means everything.

I could easily see the winner of this game going to the World Series.  I think the 100 win Cardinals team is ripe for the picking.  I think the Dodgers and their 1-2 punch will melt down in the playoffs.  I don’t think the Mets are ready.  This is why I wanted to play the Pirates in this one game wild card… because I think they are the best team in the National League…after us of course.  Yeah, I know, it sucks that it’s a one game playoff… but I’m not complaining.

Yes, maybe the matchup between these teams is better served in a 7 course meal in the NLCS.  What a battle that would be.  But we have to settle for this, and I’m not mad.  You win the division, and you don’t have to worry about this.  You don’t, and you do.  Going back a number of years, the Cubs would be on the outside looking in with their impressive 97 wins.  At least we have a chance…  At least we’re in the game.

And with Jake on the mound, why would I be mad?  He is our best pitcher and he is pitching in the game that means everything.  I couldn’t imagine a better scenario for us.  If he gets hit, and the Cubs end up losing this one, so be it.  At least we went out with our best.

But I’m not planning on losing tomorrow night.  I’m planning to win.  I’ll be hanging on each and every pitch, and of course believe this game will be decided by one run and go down to the excruciating wire, but this is what it is.  This is playoff baseball.  This is the Cubs.  Would you expect anything less?

So, I take a deep breath.  It’s not gameday yet.  I can watch and listen to the AL version tonight.. relaxed… still waiting… still trying to be patient… still trying to prepare myself for tomorrow night.  It can’t come any sooner, and it can’t get any better.  One game take all…  everything at stake… everything possible for the winner…  good luck to us.
