When’s the last time you celebrated a loss? When it comes to our sports teams, I can’t think of many examples where there was a celebration after a loss. That’s exactly what happened after Saturday’s loss to the Pirates at Wrigley Field; these young Cubs celebrated their postseason birth.
Yes, it happened late last night. Yes, we missed our opportunity to clinch yesterday afternoon vs the Pirates, and yes, we couldn’t get a win this afternoon either, but we’re still celebrating. That’s what these Cubs do. That’s what we should all do. We should celebrate every chance we get.
In a 162 game season, there are many ups and downs. Although you must remain even keel, you must enjoy the ride. Many, many one run wins, walkoff wins, historic wins.. there were lots of things to be happy about this year for the Cubbies. Clinching a playoff birth is the biggest so far. As Joe said in the postgame interview, we know we need to celebrate 4 more times to accomplish our goal.
That should always be the goal, yet it hasn’t been the last few years for the Cubs. The rebuild, the way the Cubs did it, almost guaranteed losing seasons… and that’s exactly what happened. In fact just last year, the Cubs lost 89 games. That was preceded by 96, 101, 91, & 87 wins… the last five years have been a rough ride. But is anyone questioning Theo and company now? Crickets…

The plan worked. Yes, it cannot entirely work until the Cubs raise the World Series trophy, but the Cubs now have a team that should be a force to reckon with for years. No, it’s not a money bought team… a band of high priced free agents brought together one year to try to win it all. No, it’s not a last ditch effort of a veteran team to get the spotlight. No, this is young, hungry and homegrown baby… the seeds were planted, and we’re watching them grow… ahead of schedule. Yes, it helps to have money. Adding a free agent here and there adds to the perfect mix. The Cubs will be able to continue to add here and there for the next couple years. All those young guys… yeah, they’re locked up for a while. The best is yet to come.
Of course this is the Cubs, and stuff happens. I remember a pitching staff that was supposed to be awesome for many years fall apart. I remember making the playoffs in back to back years only to not win one playoff game. I remember a host of can’t miss prospects that missed. Yes, stuff happens, and it has happened to the Cubs over the years. I mean, how does a team go 107 years without a championship? Yes, a combination of not enough talent, bad luck, choking, and any other word you’d like to add. It’s been rough, and that’s why I say Cubs fans are the best fans. Those of us that have not turned our back on the team after one of the many brutal season endings, or after a lifetime of not winning it all… those of us who are sticking with the team until we see that day… we are the true die hards. We deserve to celebrate too.
I can appreciate the celebration of getting into the playoffs. I smiled. I have appreciated all the celebrations throughout the year, and look forward to celebrating a game 163 W, a NLDS series win, and when we win the National League title. Yes, it’s all fun. But… I’m waiting for THE celebration. That doesn’t mean I can’t celebrate everything else, enjoying that ride every moment… But I want to see the only thing I’ve got left to see in my sports lifetime. We all get another chance at that this year. Thanks 2015 Cubs, and good luck to us!
