How late did you stay up last night? I saw that the A’s were winning, but then I fell asleep. When I woke back up, and staggered down the hallway half asleep, I checked my phone and saw the good news. The San Francisco Giants had lost, and if you haven’t been sleeping under a rock lately, you know, this means the Cubs are back in the playoffs.
1906, 1907, 1908, 1910, 1918, 1929, 1932, 1935, 1938, 1945, 1984, 1989, 1998, 2003, 2007, 2008, and now, 2015. The Chicago Cubs will make their 17th postseason appearance in a little more than a week. The first 10 playoff appearances led to World Series appearances. We all know that history. 1908 being our last World Series title, while 1945 was our last appearance in the final series of the year. We’ve had 6 appearances since then that have all fell short of the World Series. We get another chance this year.
With the Cubs back in the playoffs again, at least for one game, we start to remember. We start to remember the past… and it hasn’t been too pretty. I’m not sure if there is anyone around from 1908, and a number of us who were alive in 1945, but for me, it’s the last 6 appearances that I remember. Back in 1984, it was 39 years since the Cubs last made the playoffs… the longest drought of that kind in Cubs history. Really thought we had a chance that year. It should have been a rematch of that 1945 series, but the bastard Padres ended that dream… I was 8. We only had to wait 5 years after that for a return trip, and we fell short against the Giants losing 4-1 in the NLCS. 1998 was the one game play in game that we won, which led to a sweep in the NLDS at the hands of the Braves. 2003, the last time we actually won a playoff game, may have been the most painful. We were right back in there in 2007 and 2008, both ending in sweeps the wrong way.
But that’s all behind us at this point… this is the 1st playoff appearance for THIS Cubs team. They may not recall the history, but we do… and this is why we worry. Although the memories are flowing, I’m still not totally there yet. I’m still trying to enjoy the ride. After all, I really believe this team is just scratching the surface, and for that, I couldn’t be more excited. I couldn’t be more excited because I don’t think we’ll have to wait 7 more years until our next playoff appearance. In fact, I’m thinking this Cubs run will rival the early 1900 Cubs who appeared in the playoffs 4 of 5 years.

Let’s just worry about this year for now, because every chance you get at this thing, you have to treat sacred… I’m starting to sound like Theo. This is true though, because once you get in, anything can happen.
So 163 is a reality. This game will most likely be played in Pittsburgh, and the pitchers will be Arrieta vs Cole. We’ve seen the Pirates many times this year, and have 2 more games with them this weekend. I’ve actually rooted for the Pirates prior to this year; they’re one team I don’t really mind. This year is different though. They will be standing in the way of the Cubs moving on, so now I must dislike them… or hate them depending on the result in 163. The thing is, they are a very, very good team… just as the Cubs. A matchup in the NLCS would seem more appropriate, instead of letting 1 game decide the fate of one of our teams. But it is what it is, and the fact that we’re IN the game, is an accomplishment in itself.
So, we can breathe… for now. Let’s keep that momentum going and stay healthy. Everything should have 163 in mind at this point, and I’m sure Joe will act accordingly. Much more to talk about this as we approach the day, but WE MADE IT! Front door, back door, the Cubs clinched a postseason birth last night. Buckle up!

Welcome back Chicago Cubs! Hopefully, it will be a long run this year ending in the ultimate goal of a World Series title. If not, the Cubs are ahead of schedule and should get used to making the playoffs. The more you get in, the better your chances of finally ending the ultimate drought.
There is nothing like meaningful baseball at Wrigley field. With the Cubs in the playoffs, there is an excitement with them that spreads across the US, and even the world! Just having a shot this year makes me and a whole lot of others on edge. We remember the failed attempts, how long it’s been since reaching the WS, let alone winning one. We are programmed to worry, be nervous, and doubt…expect the worst. Those feelings will always be in our heads, but this year and in the future, we have legitimate hope. This year feels different. Theo, Maddon, and the talented young Cubs have breathed life into us once again. We are ready for the playoffs. We are ready for a playoff run. We are ready to win. We are ready for the unexpected because next year is here and now! Take advantage of this opportunity and make the most of it. Believe Cubs nation! Believe young Cubbies!! I BELIEVE!!!
GO CUBS GO!!!

“There is nothing like meaningful baseball at Wrigley field.” MK, hope you realize that there still exists a possibility that there will not be any meaningful (as post-season) baseball at Wrigley this year.

Like Ive said before, as die hard Cubs fans, you always realize the ugly possibilities, and there will always be people to remind you of them! Stay tuned.
