As we travel back through the 1985 season, we arrive at the week 2 matchup at Soldier Field with the New England Patriots. Many, many years before becoming the cheaters that they are, the Patriots had a solid team. They would be the AFC participant in Super Bowl XX that year. Even Bill Belicheat couldn’t have prevented what would happen then, but let’s see how they fared 4 months earlier in Chicago.
Not much better. The Bears defense coming off a tale of two halves game against the Bucs the previous week, were locked and loaded in this one. How much time do you think the Patriots spent on the other side of the 50 yard line this day? 17 seconds. Yes, that’s not a typo, and half of that was slow ass Craig James running the last 50 yards of the 90 yard TD reception that ruined the Bears shutout. They did manage to get 27 rushing yards this day… ha!
Doing my research on this game, I read a Chicago Sun Times article. I’d really love to get to the library, and look at the microfiche for all the publications for this year. If I didn’t have this day job, I could spend all day at Harold Washington library gathering all kinds of info. Then, only then, would you get the A+ type hard hitting, quality stories… one day. For now, we’ll have to settle for the most time friendly method… the internet. Remember, I do have the video of each game this year… I’d like to watch those and break it down at some point.

Singletary had a decent game… 3 sacks and a pick. The other LBs each had a sack too… Wilber and Mama’s Boy. Sackman chipped in one too, and even had a interception too. Fencik had a INT as well. I can’t tell who got the fumble recovery though; now I’ve got to watch the video… 4 TOs on the day for New England. Reading the article, it’s amazing how these guys still weren’t satisfied. They wanted to be better. They had to be pretty pissed to give up that long pass play to ruin their shutout. They’d get another chance at these Pats.
McMahon’s back was acting up, which would lead him to the bench for the start of next week’s game, which would come on short rest. He would make an appearance though. Even Sweetness wasn’t 100% for this one, but he played. Go figure! This guy would play through anything. McKinnon had the TD reception, and Suhey the TD run. Butthead kicked 2 more FGs. The Bears were now 2-0.
The Bears first true test would come next week in Minnesota. It would be a special Thursday night game. It sure would be special. As for this one, ho hum. We laid a beatdown on a pretty good team. Little did we know that this would be the Super Bowl XX preview. Funny thing is, 4 months later, the results would be pretty much the same. Now back to our regularly scheduled blogs…
