Does anybody remember what the 1985 Bears record was? Of course, everybody does. Does anybody remember what the 1985 Bears preseason record was? OK, you don’t have to look it up. Their preseason record was 1-3.
So is this enough proof as to how meaningless the preseason is? I don’t remember that preseason at all. My memory really picks up in week 3 of the regular season, and is pretty solid from there, but we’ll talk about that later. The 1985 preseason is an empty void in my head… there’s a lot of those. I wonder if people were concerned about the Bears that year. I wonder if people were already throwing in the towel on the season based on the Bears stellar performance in those worthless games. I could just imagine if that was today… Sports radio would be going crazy. The newspapers would be having a coronary. Were we that gullable back 30 years ago? Did each and every move by the Bears get scrutinized as it does today?
Well, if it did, I guess scoring 3 points in the preseason opener would have got some people pissed. Yeah, we only gave up 10, but it was to the then St. Louis Cardinals in the old Busch Stadium. Just get shivers mentioning that team… Those birds have since then flown west like many of us midwesterners over time, so I don’t hate them… actually, there are some great memories of the Arizona Cardinals. But a 10-3 loss to begin the preseason?? to these Birds??? WTF?
So game 2 will be better…coming home to play the hapless Baltimore Colts. Another team that’s moved west since then, or wait did they become the Ravens? No, those are the Browns.. this was when Art Modell pulled them in the middle of the night to come to Indy, right? Anyways, back in Soldier Field to a 24-13 loss. I wonder how much a ticket to a preseason game was 30 years ago? Had to get in for $5 right? They probably just let people in. An 0-2 start!?! What is this world coming to? Surely in game 3 of the preseason, where the starters play the most, this Bears team will rock it….

Nope, Game 3 in Irving against Dallas was the same result. This time a close 15-13 loss. An 0-3 start to the preseason. Yeah, we’d see these Cowboys a little bit later on this year when it counts… I wonder what happened in that one…
The Bears finished the preseason with a win (whew!) against the Bills 45-14. Were they just letting some frustration out? Geez, call off the dogs Mike. Little did we know, that after this preseason win, there would follow 12 regular season wins in a row.
Based on the preseason results, 1985 looked to be a so so year. Coming off a tough playoff loss to the 49ers the year before, having all of these contact disputes, and going 1-3 in the preseason… Rough start? Nope, just getting all the BS out of the way. Let’s just wait until week 1 actually rolls around and see if this team is going to do anything this year…haha.
