September 1, 2015: Settling In

So it’s September 1st and the Cubs are in playoff position.  How you feeling?

Coming off the high of the no hitter on Sunday night, the Cubs looked horrible against the Reds on Monday.  You think they celebrated a bit much in their PJs on the way home?  That kind of added to the whole night; the fact that all the Cubs were in pajamas following that game.  Very memorable.  I still can’t believe I missed the game itself.

The Cubs were back in business on Tuesday night.  It was a back and forth affair with these jerkoff Reds.  They’re definitely aren’t making it easy, but why should they.  That’s going to be part of the challenge this next month.  Not only do we need to play at the same level as the Pirates and Cardinals, but we need to take care of these teams that have nothing to lose.  The Reds fall in that category, yet they still have some very dangerous hitters.  With Votto, Bruce, Frazier, and Phillips, these guys are still bringing it.  Then you have those young guys trying to make their impression… we may see some other teams like this down the stretch.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals walked off yesterday…hate those bastards.  But more importantly, the Pirates lost, and most importantly, the Giants lost.  I’m kind of giving up hope of catching the Cardinals; maybe I should have forgotten about that long ago.  At 9.5 games, it seems insurmountable, unless of course we beat them every game we see them in September, and even then…  So, the division is out of reach.  But the Pirates, are not.  3.5 games back I believe is doable.  How important is having game 163 at home?  Cubs have played very well at Wrigley as of late, but they are a very solid road team too.  More pressure at home, less pressure on the road?  I don’t think where this game is played is that important, but I’d always lean to playing at home… especially with a young team.

With all that being said, the most important thing to follow when scoreboard watching is our lead on that 2nd wild card spot.  At 6.5 games, I’m feeling pretty damn good.  Like I mentioned before, the Giants have a better chance at catching the Dodgers than us, although losing the first 2 to them is not helping that cause.  But it is helping our cause.  Our lead is fat… we need to maintain that, while preparing for that extra game.

Line up the starters… get guys some rest… give some other guys some playing time… move guys around… do everything and anything you can do to be 110% ready, all while maintaining that lead, and not losing any momentum.  If anybody can help accomplish this, it’s Joe.  Anybody missing Ricky Renteria?  Uh, no.  If you weren’t convinced what a no brainer that was then, I think we all are now.  Joe Maddon has played a huge role in this season’s success.  He doesn’t always push the right button, but at least he’s pushing them… and his overall hit rate on his moves is pretty damn good.

So, let’s enjoy some September baseball.  It’s great to be a contender when it matters, and that’s exactly what we are.  As we are settling in to our wild card position, let’s keep those dreams high… because anything can happen once you get in.  GO CUBS!
