In this 2nd installation of the 1985 flashback special feature, we look at where this dream began.

Now, we could look at how this team was constructed ,which by the way, was mostly through the draft.  We could look at each of the individual players and trace back their roots to see how their lives led to this crossing of paths in Chicago in 1985.  How about the coaching staff, and how and when they got here?  There are many ways to do this, but I’m just going to roll back to late 1984. 

The Bears were back in the playoffs for the first time in 5 years.  They had finished with a 10-6 record that year, and were pitted to play the Redskins.  The game was in RFK with a noon start on December 30; the Bears were 9 point underdogs.  Steve Fuller was at the helm, since McMahon had gotten knocked out for the year in week 10 with laceration of the kidney.  He threw for 2 of the 3 receiving TDs that game for the Bears.  The 3rd was thrown by none other than Walter Payton, who also had over 100 yards rushing in that game.  The Bears prevailed 23-19 in a pretty big upset.  This was the first taste of playoff victory for most of this crew.

The Bears knew which one.  There would be some new players added that year in the draft that would help the Bears achieve this feeling again.  In the first round, William Perry was selected out of Clemson.  I wonder if he knew the great impact he would have.  Other draftees that made that 1985 team included Reggie Phillips, Kevin Butler, Thomas Sanders, and Jim Morrissey.  Couple of those names would eventually put their stamp on this season as well.  There were a couple of guys who would not.

2 of the most famous holdouts in history, Todd Bell and Al Harris, would not be on this 1985 team.  Both very highly regarded players on the field, would miss the entire season; talk about bad timing.  I guess it all worked out in the end for everybody but these two..  let’s just be glad the Bears sign one of their other holdouts… Mike Singletary. 

So the stage was set as the Bears reported to training camp in Platteville, WI… only their 2nd year in that location.  Would this team achieve its goal of Super Bowl glory?  Welcome to 1985.
