August 23, 2015: Braver

The Cubs finished off the sweep today.  It was another 4 game variety.  We were just talking about 1945.

That was the year the Cubs last saw the World Series.  The Tigers beat them in 7 that year.  This is the first time since then that the Cubs have swept 4 different 4 game series.  I remember the Giants, Brewers, and now Braves; I’d have to look the other one up.  I had a feeling it would turn out this way.

The Braves have fallen on hard times.  It’s not typical to see them struggle.  Like the Cardinals, you could almost always expect them to be good; not this year.  Their history of success is something we hopefully see from this Cubs team.  Yeah, it’s a little premature, but to string together a number of winning seasons that include playoff appearance, is a good measure of success.  Of course, winning it all is the ultimate, and the Braves only did that once I think… maybe twice.  You’d like to cash in more times than that when you’re there that often, but I’ll take one right about now.

The Cubs now sit 20 games above .500.  Yes, that’s not a typo.  That is strange to see from a Cubs team, I can admit that.  This train is moving in the right direction… ain’t no stopping it now.  Now with a 6 game cushion on the 2nd wild card spot, they sit only 3 games behind Pittsburgh for the 1st wild card, and only 6.5 games behind the Cardinals.  Something unthinkable is now within striking distance.  Could this Cubs team catch the Cardinals?

Well, yeah, they’d have to catch the Pirates first, but why not?  We play them each 2 series before it’s all said and done.  Forget all that talk about game 163, and let’s win the division.  Too early to start talking playoffs?  I think not.  They asked that question in a recent article talking about the Cubs sending out playoff tickets to their season ticket holders.  I don’t think anyone can reasonably say that we shouldn’t be talking playoffs at this point.  Could they blow it?  Sure.  Could it all end in game 163?  Sure.  Will our season end in the hands of the Cardinals in the NLDS?  Maybe.  Will we fall to the Dodgers in the NLCS?  Possibly.  Could we lose to the AL in the World Series?  OK… now we’re getting ahead of ourselves, but the anxiety is starting to set in.

The Cubs are good again… that’s not a newsflash.  This season has exceeded expectations thus far.  This season is hopefully only the tip of the iceberg.  It’s an exciting time to be a Cubs fan; I’m glad I can say that again.

The Cubs proved they were braver this weekend, but we’ll see if we can still call these young guys that as the calendar turns… as the 2nd season begins.  Too young to know?  Maybe.  I just can’t wait to find out.  GO CUBS GO!

Mets was the other 4game sWeep.
Braves only won once in 1995.
20 games over and looking real good for the playoffs, but a little over a month left and anything can happen. Who knows, maybe the Cubs can catch the bucs and birds! Either way, confidence is high right now…dont think overconfidence with the Cubs is possible with all the loveable loser and curse reminders. I have faith in maddon and these young Cubs…nobody thought they would be playing like this so why not just keep it up and win it all! GO CUBS GO…JUST DO IT!!!
