August 16, 2015: The Weekend That Was

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 0

We left off talking about the Cubs Sox rivalry… after I had celebrated the Cubs friday victory over the Sox.  The weekend held the rest of the series, and the outcome was sort of expected.

Saturday was an awesome game.  It was definitely a Cubs Sox game.  There’s always crazy stuff that happens in these games… the weirdest things.  Saturday had plenty of them.  Jake throwing over Rizzo’s head, Bryant’s dropped ball in the rundown, Ramirez’ bad throw trying to turn two, and of course, the best one, the dropped fly ball by Adam Eaton… you know, the one he never saw.  That’s a bad feeling…

I remember playing left field (or maybe center) in pony league.  It was a perfect day, not a cloud in the sky.  One of those really bright, high blue skies made it sometimes hard to see a fly ball, especially one hit very high in the air.  So, sure enough, there was the crack of the bat and there was a fly ball coming my way… that much I knew.  As I tried to track it, I lost it… so, I stood there with my glove up, like the ball was going to miraculously land in it.  It didn’t; thankfully, it only landed about 10 feet behind me.  I can’t remember if he got a home run on that one, but it was pretty embarassing; a helpless feeling really.  So to see this happen to major leaguers is great… kind of like seeing professional golfers shank a shot, or have trouble getting out of the rough.  It’s these rarities that make the pros more relatable to us.

It wouldn’t have been as funny if that had happened to the Cubs.  I always fear something freak like that happening to the Cubs in the biggest moment, because after all, they are the Cubs.  But to see it happen to the Sox in this game, was great.  The game had everything, besides the defensive lapses on both sides.  That Sox 3B made some phenomenal plays in the 2nd inning I think.  3 in a row!  We had some clutch hitting from the Cubs rookies.  We also had a thrown beer can at Schwarber in the corner… that’s about right.

If you asked me what MLB stadium were you likely to have a thrown beer can on the field, I would nominate the Cell.  Man, when Scharber went into that corner, they were letting him have it; I’m cool with that.  But then a tallboy came flying at him… thankfully the dude had bad aim; he was escorted off the premises.  If he was on somebody’s season ticket, they may get in trouble for that.  They probably won’t be forced to give up their tickets, because after all, how many season ticket holders do the Sox have?  Anways, Kyle got back at the Sox and their fans in a good way later that game.

Man on 2nd, 2 outs… the Sox had a mound conference.  They decided to intentionally walk Dexter Fowler to get to Kyle Schwarber.  I was so hoping Kyle came through in that spot.  The move made sense, except for the fact that this rookie has been red hot.  He came through.  After battling with the tough lefty, Kyle lined one into right to score Russell; nice tag by Flowers by the way… must have learned from the same guy Castro did.  That was probably my favorite moment of the game next to the dropped fly ball.  Entertaining all the way, and I got to watch just about every pitch.  Sweet…. time for the sweep on Sunday, right?

Wrong.  Let’s remember who was on the mound on Sunday afternoon for the Sox.  Chris Sale.  The man is impressive no doubt.  He is one of those guys that can dominate you… and he did.  Thankfully, I didn’t see one pitch of that game, but I read enough, and have seen Sale enough to know how this one went.  Len Kasper said he was more dominant than Cole Hamels was in his no hitter against the Cubs.  There’s not that many pitchers out there that can do this.  Sale is one of the few.  Respect all the way, tip the cap.. and let’s move on.  No team could have beat Sale and the Sox on this day.

It sucks that he’s stuck with the Sox.  The thing about having somebody like that… just get into that one game wild card.  There is no team, no pitcher that you can face that you’ll feel at a disadvantage against.  Sale against anybody, and I’m leaning Sale.  One of the top pitchers in the game will not pitch in the playoffs again… and has yet to in his career.  One day hopefully he will… maybe the Cubs can add him to the rotation.  That would go down as some cross town history… unlikely, but just imagine…

OK, so the Cubs Sox rivalry has been put to rest for 2015.  The split is in the books, and the last 6 weeks of the season lies ahead.  It was fun while it lasted, but now on to more important business.  Playoffs!!!  Only one team has to worry about that though… GO CUBS!
