August 8, 2015: Lights Out

posted in: Cubs | 1

Another game, another win. The Cubs have now taken the first three from the Giants in Wrigley this weekend, as they’ve snatched the 2nd wild card spot from them. At 13 over 500, and 2.5 games up on the Giants for that final postseason position, the Cubs are playing lights out.

8-8-88…27 years ago today, the lights were on for the first time in Wrigley.  Yes, that first cubs home run at night in Wrigley by Ryno didn’t stand because of the rain, which made this game and all associated stats not count. Instead, 8-9-88 was the first official night game. A lot has changed since then, and a lot has stayed the same.

The Cubs still haven’t won a world series.  There have been some good teams mixed in with all the bad ones, but none that could ever reach that pinnacle, let alone that final series.  Us cub fans still patiently wait…

That brings us to this latest team: the team built by theo. In year 4 of the project, the Cubs are surging ahead of schedule.  With the latest run that has extended into August, the Cubs appear ready for the postseason now. Yet, we still have 50 regular season games to go.  It’s hard trying not to get ahead of ourselves.

The excitement is justified. The Cubs have planted those seeds, and they are blossoming.  Schwarber another good game. Hendricks was solid on the mound. Russell has been red hot. Bryant went way deep in this one.  It’s been a pretty impressive display this weekend with Jake set to take the mound on Sunday.  The reigning World Series champs have been slapped around thus far.  Are they done?

I’d say no…of course not. These guys are grizzled veterans…champions, multiple times.  They do seem on the down swing though, at least in the pitching department. We will miss their best pitcher this weekend, but after him their starters are weak. None have made it out of the 4th in this series. Cain is done. Lincecum too. Their offense is still pretty good, but I think the Cubs are better than them. They’ve proven it this weekend.

Yet, the Cubs have to be better again and again. They’re not done yet. Maybe this team, so young, is perfect to do this.  The whole they don’t know better theory. The youthfulness of this team is what makes it so exciting. Keep going boys. Keep playing lights out. Keep winning. Go Cubs.

Excitement is in the air at Wrigley! How can it not be? Not just for this year but the future. Theo’s master plan seems to be coming along as stated. These young guys are playing meaningful, big boy baseball in August. The excitement and pressure will only get bigger as the season rolls on. How the young guys handle it will determine their fate this year…back to the future, please! But let’s pump the brakes, as hard as that may be. 50 games is a lot of baseball left to be played and anything can happen. But if this club keeps winning series and can avoid a long losing streak, the playoffs and beyond is realistic…this year! I love when the Cubs are relevant late in the year, and I have to think the mlb world would agree. The lovable losers are winning…excitement is at Wrigley everyday…pressure will be mounting…just have these young guys keep playing big boy baseball ahead of schedule, and lead all of us to the promised land!
    GO CUBS GO!!!
