Buyers or Sellers? Are you going for it, or are you folding your hand this year? Maybe you’re standing pat, hoping that pair of jacks holds up. It was clear to see who was who.
The Royals are hungry after losing in the last game of the year. Cueto gives them an ace, and with a healthy lead in the standings, somebody to throw that 1st game in the playoffs. The Blue Jays made some waves. Tulo and David Price and Joakim Soria were all added to the only team across the border. They appear to be ready to make a big push. Just don’t get hurt up there David… we have your Cubs jersey ready for the rest of your career. How about the Astros? Kazmir and now Gomez and Fiers from Milwaukee. This young team, one of the only teams that rival the Cubs youth, made some big splashes. Royals Astros ALCS?
Our team in the AL did nothing. Oh wait, they did acquire Justin Sellers, distant cousin of Brad, from Pittsburgh. Way to make a splash boys! The Cubs didn’t do much more than that either. Acquiring Dan Haren and Tommy Hunter was something… just not the something some expected… maybe. I like it. Something is better than nothing, and adding pitching is never bad. Yet, the offense is what struggles… but it’s all the young guys. It’s all the current and future core. They need to come through for the Cubs to make any noise this year. Adding a veteran starter and bullpen guy will definitely help, but unless those young guys click on offense, it’ll be wait until next year again.

In a jumbled AL wild card race, the Sox are definitely still in it. Yet, with all the teams competing for those spots, it will be an uphill climb. I guess I can’t blame them for standing pat. I wonder if this decision was unanimous? With all the work done in the offseason, the plan they put together, it is easy to see why they don’t want to scrap it. The front office put the right pieces together, or so they thought, and they probably still want to believe that. With the 7 game winning streak in recent memory, a couple more of those puts the Sox on top of that heap scrambling for those spots. They have the same offensive consistency problems as the Cubs, and the lack of starting pitching depth. Will both teams be sitting on the outside looking in?
At least they both have chances… At least it wasn’t the Cubs dumping again. Definitely on the right track, the Cubs will be in the hunt for the foreseeable future. Can’t really say the same for the Sox. They don’t have the plethora of young talent as the Cubs do. The window for this Sox team seems smaller… 2 years maybe? The thing about the Sox is, that they don’t ever blow it up, and rebuild. They try to do the rebuild simultaneously with being competitive. As a fan, I guess you can respect that. It’s not easy. There are always tough decisions to make, but at the end of the day, it’s the players who will determine this outcome.
So not many deadline deals to talk about in Chicago. But there’s still that August 31 deadline… the players who clear waivers, so there’s still opportunity to add pieces, depending on how the race goes for the next 30. Good bye July… hello August.

Blue Jays- where is this money coming from? Adding players with no regard will blow up in their face. They will not pass the 1st round of the playoffs, if they make it. The offseason will be fun for them.
White Soxs- should have been major sellers. They had some attractive pieces for some other team which would have brought them tons of minor league talent and maybe saved them a few million. Its a dam shame to see a pitcher like Sale go to waste.
Astros- Cinderella team of AL, which will not be able to maintain if the payroll goes up much. Will be sellers in the winter no matter what the outcome is
Rangers- they never learn, A-rod, Prince, Hammels, will never play up to their contracts.
Royals- putting all their eggs in one basket, if they don’t make it far in the playoffs, it will be a fire sale.
Dodgers- This team should have thrown its weigh around and been the Yankees of the NL. This is what happens when you have more then one owner.
Cubs- Did not like the moves, but they had to do something. Ross and Kimbrel would have been really nice. Hunter and Haren both have their issues and does Baltimore have dibbs on our young outfielders?
Yankees- One of the best moves I have seen in years; do nothing; don’t spend like they own baseball.
Why you ask…well the Yankees maybe playoff bound and will make it deep…but the offseason will be very furitful for them. When the season for the Jays, Rangers, and Astros fail, they will be right there to pickup the pieces. Biggest team to watch is the Blue Jays. They are in Canada for crying out loud and no one wants to spend a possible 9 months there a year. Therefor, Price and Tulo will be Yankess by winter.
They may even get “Cole” in their stocking by Christmas only if its not put in a “Red Sox” before then.

Actually like the moves the Cubs made. It was not a big splash, but it addressed a few needs. Add a starter in haren who will definitely be an upgrade in the rotation over 4and5, and get an extra arm in the pen…always needed. Theo said we were not going to break the bank…giving up lake and 2 other minor leaguers is acceptable. The Cubs position themselves to be in the race the rest of the year as well as being major players in the offseason again. Trust in Theo! GO CUBS GO!!!
