Never of course, right? Well, as the Cubs Phillies game went to the 9th inning this afternoon, and the Cubs were trailing 5-0, and there was a no-hitter in progress, and this pitcher is somebody you’ve always been a fan of, this pitcher who is on your fantasy baseball team, and this pitcher who may very well be wearing a Cubs uniform in his next start… hmmm.. yeah, I was rooting for the no hitter.
I love the Cubs. I consider myself as die hard as anyone, but on this beautiful day in Wrigley, for one instant, technically, I guess, maybe… I was rooting against them. It didn’t start that way. It never does. I never root against the Cubs… ever. But, I am a baseball fan; I love baseball. I was a pitcher in my hey day, so I am a fan of certain pitchers more than any other position. I’m also very competitive, and when this guy resides on my fantasy roster, and I’m in a dogfight of a match up this week.. yeah, it was the perfect storm I guess.
So the no-hitter happened. Who doesn’t root for a no hitter? This was the first time the Cubs have been no hit since September 9th, 1965… 50 years! ABC played the audio from that day… it was very cool. It was none other than Vin Scully announcing, and none other than Sandy Koufax on the mound. I guess if you had to be no hit against by anyone, I would choose one of the all time greats. It was another lefty today. Cole Hamels did the deed. They showed all the scouts in the stands… I wonder what they wrote in their notebooks after this one… And if he were to get traded to the Cubs… so throw a no hitter, then get traded to the team that you no hit… I’m sure that would be a first.

The way this game went down made me forget about the Cubs disappointing week for just a second. They’re now 4-5 since the break, and yeah, by the way, they are no longer holding onto that 2nd wild card spot. And yes, the trade deadline is this week. It’s time for a turbo boost. Yet, the boost is really needed on the offensive end. This Cubs team was ripe for the picking for something like this to happen. And with possibly his last game in a Phillies uniform, Hamels was ripe for this performance. Like I said, it was a perfect storm.
So we must put this one behind us, and salvage a game tomorrow. Let’s remember, this is the worst team in baseball. The Cubs have been teetering for a while now… very potentially could have got swept in Cincy this week. Almost got swept by the Sox if it weren’t for Jake. Even Jake couldn’t keep us afloat this afternoon. Ryan Howard stepped into the time machine and had one heck of a game to back up Hamels. Two nice catches by the Phils center fielder helped save the no hitter too… I thought Ross’ ball was gone… Bryant gave a charge to his too… slipping and falling, and making the catch just above the warning track dirt. What a way to end a no hitter.
So the baseball fan took over for a second, and yes, technically I was rooting against the Cubs for an inning. That’s over now, and the reality of the situation is now at hand. The Cubs need to kick it into gear. They need to start getting some wins. They need to make a move to get better too, while not throwing the bright future away. For starters, let’s beat this last place team tomorrow. And for clarification purposes, there is never a time when it’s OK to root against your team… just always a time to be a baseball fan. GO Cubs!
