Heading down 55 vertically in the state of Illinois, you approach a city; a city that has plenty of sports teams. A city that is close enough to be considered rivals in certain situations. It was the 5 hour door to door trip to St. Louis that was completed on Saturday afternoon; we were in enemy territory.
No, it wasn’t for a sporting event, but for a wedding… at a casino… so it was good. Obviously I couldn’t wear any Chicago sports gear to the wedding, so I had to settle for the trip to and from St. Louie to represent. On the way down, I wore my Bulls shirt. No contest there. The Bulls are way better than the NBA team from St. Louis. Oh wait… they don’t have an NBA team. How do you function without a team represented in a major sport? Which team do you root for? Do you just chuck that sport altogether? I’m glad I don’t have that problem here in Chicago. I guess you can root for your state team, like the Missouri Tigers in the case of St. Louis fans. Or the closest NBA team…. the Bulls, the Grizzlies, the Pacers are all within distance. Or maybe you just hitch onto that bandwagon of the best thing going… that Warrior bandwagon had plenty of room on it for their ride this year. Maybe they just don’t watch basketball… which would be hard to believe in this midwestern city. Any way you cut it, they can’t hold a candle to the Chicago Bulls… most cities can’t.
As we stopped for a fill-up in Lincoln, Illinois, I saw a girl with a St. Louis Blues shirt on…. I just smiled. I smiled knowing who the reigning Stanley Cup champs are… knowing they reside where I reside. So when I broke out that Blackhawks BMO debit/credit card to pay for that chocolate shake, onion rings, and single at Steak and Shake, I did it proudly; although the guy behind the counter appeared to have other interests besides sports. The rivalry that is the Blues and Blackhawks is really not a rivalry, because it’s been dominated by the Hawks.

Maybe it’s because the Rams have transplanted from LA, and they’ve only been in St. Louis for… 20 years maybe??? They do have 1 Super Bowl though… the same amount as our beloved Bears. Still, I don’t think of Rams fans as die hard… not like us meat heads. It’s Da Bears in a landslide there!
That brings us to the oldest rivalry… the one that really can’t be considered a rivalry because of the domination on the St. Louis part. Yes, so my license plate cover, and shirt that I wore driving home bearing the Cubs emblem, maybe doesn’t stack up to the mighty Cardinals… but I don’t care. I still hate them, and I still love my Cubs. So walking around the casino seeing Molina, Eckstein, and Herzog shirts, among all the other Cardinal paraphernalia, made me a little sick to my stomach, but what did I expect? I was in the belly of the beast…. Red Bird nation, and yes, they do have die hard fans. Still, I did see a couple Cubs shirts… a couple… and although it will take many World Series titles to match up to them all-time, it will only take one to put a permanent smile on my face; that’s all I want.
So driving back to the Chi, passing through Atlanta and El Paso… yeah, really… and listening to Casey Kasem… yeah, it was a flashback top 40 show from July 20, 1985 (not a bad year for Chicago sports by the way), I flipped on WBBM, the new radio home for the Chicago Cubs, but… the game didn’t start until 3:05; I’ll have to flip it on at home. Yet, I still dreamed… dreamed of that glorious day; but know I still have to wait, and that’s not so bad. That’s not so bad considering all the teams we have to root for, and knowing that I wouldn’t trade our teams for any teams, regardless of how many titles a city may or may not have won, or how long I have to wait to see one. It’s Chicago all the way, but you already know this. Back home now… Cubs are shutting out the Braves, and I smile again. Sweet home Chicago…
