July 6, 2015: Lefty Night

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 2

Monday night brought out some premium lefties in the city of Chicago. With Lester on the mound in Wrigley, and Sale vs Buherle on the south side, it was truly a lefty night.

I think of the great left handers of all time. Koufax comes to mind. Never saw him pitch, but don’t really need to. Carlton is the 2nd guy I think of.  I think he was one of my dad’s favorites (please confirm). Guidry is another one. I remember having a baseball card of his. Then I think of old cubs and sox left handers. Steve Trout, no relation to Mike I think, is the one I remember the most. Mitch Williams is another. For the Sox, Koosman and Bannister jump out.  Also, one of the guys on the mound on Monday night.

Mark Buherle has to be considered of the best sox pitchers of all time. Who can forget his perfect game?  If you can’t get excited for a perfect game or no hitter no matter what the team, you got problems.  So, ok, maybe he’s not premium any more, but surprisingly he’s still dealing. To see him come into the cell and face a guy who may one day surpass him on the greatness scale for the pale hoses, had to be pretty cool. I would have actually been excited to get to the Cell to see that.

Speaking of premium, the one guy that I’ve mentioned that is undisputed is Chris Sale.  Trying to break the record for consecutive 10k games, he did come up short. Yet, he got the win, and that’s what it’s about. How about the time of that game? It had to he one of the quickest games of the year. Both guys get on the rubber and don’t mess around.  That’s the way it should be.

Back to Sale for a second, I’ve sang his praises before. The Cy Young is his to lose this year. If the Sox stay where they’re at, it’d be like Dawson winning the MVP for the Cubs in the late 80s. Still, only one lefty today even compares, and that’s kershaw…no, not Lester.

The third lefty I mentioned in the opening had maybe the best game of his season and the night with a no hitter into the 7th.  That didn’t last of course, as the cards beat the Cubs. Still, it’s nice to see some better games from him lately. He’s had a rough start, but is slowly rounding into form. We expect many more of these type of efforts Jon.

Another Lefty that comes to mind, besides Al Pacino in Donnie Brasco, and LD from work, is my son. Every indication points towards him being a lefty, thus the reason for my jersey choice for him.  Like every dad, I hope to see him one day toe that rubber, and become my favorite lefty of all time. Regardless of that outcome… sorry Chris, mark, and Jon… he already is.

    Andy Pettitte
    Tom Glavine

And how about tommy john? Bunch of pitchers have had or will get his surgery nowadays.

Sale and lester are 2 of best right now. Kershaw, price, and bumgarner might round out the current top 5.
