June 19, 2015: Where’s the Cup?

Driving home early that evening of the rally and listening to sports radio, they were already talking about the Hawks that will be gone.  And yes, although there will be players shipped off, sooner than later with the NHL draft next week, it’s not time to talk about that yet, is it?  Let’s at least make it through the weekend celebration.  By Sunday night, everything should be toning down; a full 7 nights of partying.  Let’s wait at least until then to discuss this stuff; it’s still time to enjoy!

So where’s the Cup?  There’s an app, of course, that follows Stanley on his journey throughout the city.  Back in 2010, my wife and I got lucky… we were enjoying a drink and appetizer at an outdoor establishment downtown, when a party bus pulled up.  It’s probably a bachelor/bachelorette party… until we saw this big trophy in the back of the bus; that trophy being the Stanley Cup.  Wow… where is it heading?  We finished, and drove to a supposed next stop for the Cup:  State and Lake, The Wit.  Yep, it was there, on the rooftop with the boys.  We waited downstairs…. patiently.  Another car drove up and let out some guys going to the party…  Vince Vaughn and Kevin James.  Awesome!  When will they come down?  When will they leave?  We were about ready to leave when none other than Stanley walked out the door, in its black carrying case.  As we walked up to the guy with the white gloves, he cracked open the case for us.  Fricking cool.  Close up picture of the Cup.  Our night was done.

In 2013, my wife was on that app.  We ended up seeing the Cup downtown on Hubbard St at Rockit Bar.  The boys were on the 2nd floor, displaying the Cup outside the window.  We’ve now seen the Cup twice.

That brings us to this year.  It couldn’t get better than that, could it?  Well, as my son and I made our way back downtown to grab my wife from school, she popped up the app.  The Cup on its way to Crossroads; here we go again.  As we pull up, there’s the familiar party bus.  My wife jumped out and found out that they were leaving.  Dang, just missed it.  It’s not over.

Yeah, we followed that bad boy, along with about 6 other cars.  As we laid back, trying not to be obvious, there were other cars tailgating this bus, and jockeying for best position.  As the bus made a left turn, one of the followers made the same turn from the center lane, almost causing an accident.  This is serious stuff!  Thankfully, we only had to follow it for about a mile and a half; it pulled up at the next bar of choice on Jefferson just north of Fulton.  There it was… making its way inside.

I jumped out with my son, and headed that way.  As I got there, they were closing a door inside the bar; damn, can’t get in.  So I took some snaps of it from outside through the window, except the only thing you could see in these pics is my reflection.  But I saw more people walking in…. So, I went in, and got in, and there it was… a mere 10 feet away.  I called my wife, and we made our way towards the Cup.  It’s going to happen, and it did.  We touched the Cup.  We kissed the Cup.  We took pictures, but there’s one that is my favorite.  My 3 year old son touching the Cup; he doesn’t know now, but he will when this picture is sitting framed on his dresser.  History!  He even kissed the Cup too.

Who knows if he’ll remember this day, obviously we will.  The moment has been captured in a photograph, so the proof is there.  But one day, as he gets older, among all the ticket stubs of all the games he’s ever attended, will be his picture touching the Cup.  Yes, the partying will continue through the weekend, but I think we’re done.  I think we can close the book on the Blackhawks celebration.  It’s been another great ride boys; more awesome memories.  Congratulations again 2015 Chicago Blackhawks!  You made us so proud.  Thanks for bringing the Cup back to Chicago.  We’ll never forget it!
