The NBA trade deadline arrived with a bang late Saturday night. The Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Lakers for Anthony Davis; there were some other pieces/teams involved in the deal, but that was the main component. When my wife first saw this and told me, I said it was fake news; she said “yahoo is fake news”… OK, I had to get up and check. Sure enough, it was legit. The Mavericks traded one of the top five players in the league to the Lakers; wow. My son is going to be pissed.
Luka is one of his, if not THE, favorite ball players. To send him to the Lakers to play with LeBron…. woof! Maybe if LeBron wasn’t there any more, it’d be OK, but man… And because it’s the Lakers, and because it’s Lebron, you have to believe some BS was involved. The NBA trying to help the Lakers again; the NBA trying to help Lebron again. These two storylines are definitely believable. If the Mavs were willing to deal Luka, and that word got around… they could have got a king’s ransom for him; did they? Anthony Davis is no slouch; in fact, he was the best player on the Lakers. Doncic is definitely better though. My only question: who is going to play defense now?
Looks like the NBA is going to give it another shot to see Lakers Celtics in the Finals, and give Lebron one more chance at another ring; it’s pretty clear. You just wonder… how many things that have happened over the years in the NBA, and for that matter, any other major sport, that was dictated by the higher powers that be in the NBA. I’m guessing there are more than just a couple, especially with this guy. Supposedly James didn’t know… if you believe that, I have a car to sell that’s running like new. AD didn’t know… OK. Luka didn’t know? Come on. Sure, there were no rumblings out there about this potential, but for none of those guys to have any idea? That’s hard to believe.
At the end of the day, does this make the Lakers the favorite in the West? I still don’t see them beating OKC, but… if Lebron times out his injections properly, and the refs get their script down, then… maybe. What about the Mavs? They’ve been playing without Luka for a while, not that great, but… add Anthony Davis to that team that’s been keeping their heads above water; I think they’ll be OK. I’m trying to think of the last time a trade of this magnitude went down… it’s not coming to me off the top. Obviously Lebron flipping teams; KD flipping teams… Barkley back in the day, Shaq to LA… This ranks up there. Depending on what happens now, will determine how high.
And here the Bulls sit, with their hands in their pockets, just fine with finishing around 10th in the East, again. We couldn’t unload our whole team for Doncic? Haha… Surely the Bulls will do something this time around… surely…
