January 7, 2025: Three to the Title

OK, let’s get back to the one thing that has carried me: my son’s 7th grade basketball team. We left off with the 3rd straight undefeated regular season. They had a couple non-conference games before the playoffs kick off; they won those too. There were no playoffs for the 5th grade team, so they had to “settle” for the undefeated regular season. Last year, they did have the playoffs, and brought home the championship. This year, the playoffs kicked off on Tuesday night, where the #1 seed faced the #8 seed in the conference.

I don’t like to take anything for granted, and will certainly act accordingly when the semifinals take place on Saturday, and hopefully the finals on Sunday; those could be good games. I want them to be good games. I don’t want them to lose, not at this point. If they need a reality check, let it happen next year in one of the tourneys they will be playing in. Now though, it’s time to close the deal, take care of business, and bring home the back to back title. If they were to come up short this weekend, so be it. But, if they were to come up short in this first round game, all of the kids should give up basketball… haha. I told my son to retire if they lost this one.

The coach of this team we played got a little upset during the regular season matchup, when our boys were up by 20 points after the first quarter; so much for taking an L like a man. How bad would this one get? Well, if there was no limit, no respect, purely playing their asses off, it could be a 100 point game; that’s not going to happen. But, they will be the fly on the windshield in this one; there’s no doubt about that.

The final score was 40-12, actually a little closer than I thought. The boys had two 5th graders playing up with them today; each of them scratched the scoresheet. It was a nice tune up in general. I like a lot of qualities of my son’s team. They play great defense, they move around on offense, and they move the ball. I’m not saying they’re unbeatable, but when they’re playing like that, with A+ hustle, watch out.

We stuck around to watch the next game, which would determine who we would play in the semis on Saturday. The team we thought would win did; 730pm Saturday night is set. I can’t wait.

Yep, three wins to the title; one down, two to go. One at a time though, one at a time. If the boys stay focused and bring their A game, they will not get beat. If they bring their B game, they should not get beat. If they bring their C game, and the other team brings their A game, well, then we may have a problem; I don’t expect that. Still, definitely don’t want to count the chickens yet; there have certainly been enough upsets over the years to understand that anything can happen, even if it is unimaginable. Keep at it boys. Get that W.
