New Year’s week is always good for Bowl Games. Back in the day, New Year’s day… sit back and enjoy all of the big bowls. Nowadays, the number of bowl games has grown; lots of obscure bowl games and teams, but… it’s fun. The more the merrier I say. Plus, with the inaugural 12 team playoffs taking place this year, College Football is must see TV.
Watched a bit on New Year’s Eve. Can’t believe Michigan beat Alabama. That was a double revenge game. Obviously, Michigan beat Alabama in the 4 team playoffs last year, plus…. the team they beat in the National Championship game, the Washington Huskies… their coach is the Alabama coach now, PLUS he brought some players with him, so yeah… this was completely in my wheelhouse to bet, but… after consulting with my son on our made up father-son handicap podcast, it was determined to be too many points to lay. I stood away, and then saw the Wolverines pull off one of the biggest upsets in bowl game history! Good call son. At dinner in the evening, we caught a lot of the Penn State Boise State game; what a disappointment. Yes, I did have money on the Broncos, and yes, they blew a hell of a lot of opportunities; Penn State was the first team to punch their ticket to the final four.
New Year’s Day brought the remaining playoff games, until the ND Georgia game was delayed thanks to what happened in New Orleans; scary stuff. We did catch some of the Texas Arizona State game; taking the points and ML almost came through again, but… we’ll take the win plus the points with the Sun Devils. I would have loved to see them pull it out, but nope… the Longhorns will march on. Ohio State absolutely curb stomped undefeated Oregon; bit of a shocker I think. Not surprised OSU won, but in this manner?!?! And then, the following day, Notre Dame took care of Georgia. The Bulldogs without their starting QB weren’t able to get it done, but the Irish are certainly no slouch. The final four is set. Who you got?
Well, I’ve already taken Notre Dame over Penn State; still debating OSU and Texas. Guessing I’ll be on the dog, although the Buckeyes have certainly looked the part after botching the rival game against Michigan. The way these playoffs are turning out, with the 4 big boys remaining, has to be exactly what the NCAA and the networks that cover it, wanted. I would have loved to see one dark horse in there, like Arizona State, but I’ll still be tuning into these semifinal games, as well as, whatever the final game turns out to be. If there was one college football team that I have cheered for the most in my lifetime, it has to be the Irish, thus… I’m rooting for them to take it all. Let’s get it done Notre Dame!
