If there was one year, any year in my life that I couldn’t wait to be over, it was 2024. I know, I know… it’s just the flip of the calendar; it’s just another day, right? Still, saying goodbye to one year, and hello to a new year, feels pretty damn good. 2024 be gone!
Where do I start? I’m not a Sox fan by any means, but they turned in the worst season in MLB history; that’s not easy to do. Since they do have Chicago in front of their team name, even though that is sometimes overlooked by national sports networks, it still hurts. Although the Cubs did much better record wise, they were still a disappointment. Not making the playoffs equals failure. Acting like a small-mid market team while assembling a roster to compete is like a slap in the face for all of us. Certainly looking ahead to next year is the way to go here. The Sox can’t possibly be worse, while the Cubs, by acquiring Tucker (hopefully more to go), may finally put their pocketbooks into building this roster? We can hope.
Chicago sports has been brutal; should I go on? Sure… the Bulls are stuck in NBA purgatory. Running out the same guys year after year, guys that aren’t horrible, but aren’t really that great… guys that nobody else wants (#8)… consistently finishing in the play-in game range, if that… they’re right on track this year too. It sucks to be a Bulls fan right about now. The Blackhawks? Ha! We won the lottery; we got Bedard!!! And… we still suck. Sure, it’s only his 2nd year, but man… definitely thought we’d be a little better than we currently are. Not enough help? Fired the coach. What gives? Firing coaches is a thing by the way… why not Donovan with the Bulls? Fire Billy! This brings us to the Bears. They fired their head coach, OC, and cut some guys; how’d that work out? The Bears have lost 10 in a row… 10 in a row!!! Sure, I’ll take the silver lining that is Caleb Williams, but… man, we got some work to do, starting at head coach. And the GM, president relationship/ability… I just don’t know. This year has to be one of the worst years in Chicago sports history.
Of course, any other year, that would be enough to make a bad year. Funny thing is, this year, that’s not even close to the worst thing. Yes, my mother died in April, which is the #1 reason why 2024 should be fired into the sun. Brutal man, just brutal. Thankfully, there is good to offset it, but factoring everything together, even my 2 fantasy football titles (haha), I still have to say 2024 was the worst, if not the most challenging, year of my life, period.
So yeah… this NYE has a little extra oomph to it. Saying goodbye to THIS year will be easy. I will extend my arm and extend my middle finger and say be gone 2024! 2025 couldn’t come soon enough; it’s finally here. And what better way to start a new year than taking a little vacation. Let’s kick off the New Year on the right foot.
