The Cubs have been making some moves… finally. There was an addition and a subtraction; overall, I feel pretty good about it. Let’s start with the great news.
The Cubs got Kyle Tucker; why do I want to call him Justin? Kyle, Tuck, King Tuck… whatever… this deal was a good one; it can be a great one if they resign him. He only has one year left on his deal, but is still a pretty young dude. Lock this mofo up. Break out the checkbook. The guy can rake. Finally, finally, have added a much needed big bat into the lineup. You can argue we did that a couple years ago…
The Cubs signed Cody Bellinger 2 years back; I wasn’t thrilled. First off, he was a Dodger… haha. Secondly, his best days seemed to be behind him. Cody proved me wrong in his first year with the club. He had a great 2023, for a surprisingly better than expected Cubs team, that faded down the stretch. In 2024, last year, the story wasn’t as great. Although he played in the same number of games, a respectable 130, pretty much all of his numbers were down… dramatically. 16 less hits, 23 less runs, 8 less HRs, 19 less ribbies, and a batting average 41 points lower. People are upset we traded him?
Sure, would I have liked to get more back; no doubt. Why do our teams always seem to get the short end of a deal? Was this a pure salary dump from a throwback cheap ass Cubs front office? If that was the case, I’d be pissed, even if I wasn’t such a big Cody fan. I believe, and I’ve been wrong before, that the cap space freed up will be spent elsewhere, on a better player. If that DOES happen, then I’ll be very happy. Who else should we get? Another big bat? A starting pitcher? I’m hearing Luzardo’s name thrown around… I’d be fine with that.
Honestly, I can’t believe we got Tucker; the Cubs finally did something. Found out about it when I was doing some Christmas shopping. Finally, the Cubs acting like the big market team they are; bravo! And then… a salary dump?!?! Again, thinking this move was a precursor to another upcoming move… I’ll be waiting.
As for Cody… bye bye Belli! It was fun, sort of, while it lasted. The chanting of “Cody, Cody, Cody” which came right before you took one out of Wrigley… that was cool. You looked like a cool guy to hang out with, but… on the baseball field, I think your best days are behind you, and we were paying a whole lot of money for that. I won’t miss you that much, like some people are acting. Geez, he was with us 2 years?!?! Let it go. No real attachment here. Just want the Cubs to keep investing in and improving the roster like a deep pockets franchise should. Don’t stop now Jed. Go Cubs.
