Feed me all the NFL you got; that’s pretty much my attitude. I love football right about now, other than the whole train wreck that has been the Bears season recently. Still, Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday… put a game on, and I’ll do my best to watch it. My wife asked last night: why are we watching this game? Besides the obvious answer that “it’s football, and any time there’s an NFL game on, I’d like to watch it”, there was added meaning to the Thursday night tilt. Of course it featured a team that I love to hate, the Green Bay Packers.
Now I’m all about the NFL; I think I just established that. However, when it comes to the ins and outs, ups and downs, and the narratives that the media tries to force feed you, I dislike certain things. Not surprisingly, I’m a little sick of the NFL trying to ram Jordan Love down my throat. Here’s a quick newsflash: He ain’t Aaron Rodgers. Another bulletin: He ain’t Brett Favre. Just because you hit on back to back HOF QBs (with 1 Super Bowl title each), doesn’t mean every damn QB you roll out there is going to be fitted for the gold jacket. Jordan Love is NOT that guy. Yeah, yeah, big words from this Bears fan who still is waiting for his team to beat a Jordan Love Packer team… I get it. Still, what I also get, is that he’s not that great. He had one good (really good) half of a season, and got paid a king’s ransom for it; I wonder how the Green Bay organization is feeling about that right about now.
Let me take this a step further. I will say right now, yes, RIGHT NOW, that Caleb Williams is better than Jordan Love, period, point blank. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to say that, like since Jim McMahon vs Dickey/Zorn in my lifetime. It feels… great. Yes, OK, I know… the record; standings check! I got it. It hasn’t parlayed itself into results… yet. But let’s take a peek at the stats, shall we? Of course, it’s not ALL about the stats, but… they do help paint a picture.
Love has thrown for 112 more yards than Caleb in 1 less game due to injury. He has 21 TDs to Caleb’s 14; wait, I thought I was trying to make a case for Caleb? Green Bay is a better team, right? I know I won’t get an argument there; let me continue. Love has thrown 11 picks, while Caleb, in his rookie season, behind an offensive line that needs work to put it nicely, has thrown 5… 5!!! Caleb has been sacked 49 times to Love’s 11… holy f-ing shit! Offensive line differences… play calling… experience… allowed excessive holding… pick a reason or combination of them all, but it ain’t good. Caleb’s completion percentage is still only 1.2% worse than Jordan’s; I hate that his name is Jordan… haha.
Maybe I didn’t convince you, and maybe I don’t watch enough Jordan Love to really know, but… from what I have seen of him, and of Caleb, who of course I watch intently, I see a difference. Caleb keeps his eyes down the field until the very last moment; I love that. Love… well, one of the last plays on Thursday night, he had a WR waving to him in the end zone, as he put his head down and ran for 2 yards; I don’t even want to bring up the wide open WR he missed in the end zone earlier in the game. Again, I don’t see everything Love does; he did make one nice pass that I saw… Let’s just say I am very happy to be going against him (and Jayden Reed for that matter) this week in fantasy.
Time will tell; I’ve been waiting for the tables to turn on the rivalry, back to the way they were when I was a kid in the 80s… still waiting; patience is a virtue I say. Yet, if what I suspect is true, and we do in fact have the better QB, then the tables have started to turn. We may not see it just yet, but it’s been set in motion… now if we can only find a coach and line… Bear Down!
