Typically, the “madness” is reserved for March, and the field of 64, the brackets, the single elimination college basketball tournament that takes place every spring. There are many in the running, but not sure many could beat the first two days of that annual tourney. Yet, what’s been going on in College Football this year, since the jump, because of the creation of the 12-team playoff in its inaugural year, there’s more madness than ever, and this time, it’s on the football side of things in college. Actually, I’m loving it.
I haven’t had too bad of a college football season betting wise either; definitely been holding my own, unlike the senior circuit the NFL. With all the great matchups, with one loss not eliminating you from contention for the year, shit, not even two losses knocking you out of the convo… 3 losses??? With 12 slots available, the whole strength of schedule/conference card, the money making teams vs the no-names, it shall be interesting to see how it all shakes out. Georgia seems like a safe choice, although they almost lost to Georgia Tech on Friday night in Athens; 8 OTs?!?! It was a crazy game… lots of madness to be sure. They will face Texas, who took care of A&M in their big rivalry game on Saturday, in the SEC Championship game; both of these teams should be in.
Oregon remains the only undefeated team, and will play in the Big 10 championship game against… Penn State?!?! Speaking about madness… how about Michigan upsetting Ohio State as 20+ pt dogs?!?! What a choke job by the Buckeyes, yet… most likely, they will still be in the playoffs; only a complete run to the title will save their head coach’s job IMO. Penn State should be in regardless of the result in the Big 10 title game; that’s 5 teams so far. Notre Dame is the 6th team. They avoided controversy by taking care of business against USC this weekend. Their only loss was at the hands of mighty NIU… which at the time, potentially eliminated them from the convo, but… sweeping their way through the rest of the season, weak or not, definitely gets them in with that 1 ugly loss.
You would imagine Tennessee would be in, after coming back from a 14-0 deficit to beat Vanderbilt on Saturday; there’s 7. Indiana? After their only loss of the season last week, they bounced back with a 66-0 shellacking of bottom feeder Purdue; it would be crazy if they didn’t get in. So that’s 8, and so far 4 Big Ten schools, 3 SEC schools, and ND, which at some point, one day, should be part of a conference, no? Guess they really don’t need the money… The winner of the Arizona State, who was picked to finish last in the Big 12, and Iowa State, both teams winning this weekend, will be in; that’s 9. The winner of Clemson and SMU will be IN; that’s 10. Now we have Boise State, Miami, the loser of the Clemson/SMU game, and the three 3 loss SEC teams, Alabama, Ole Miss, and South Carolina; are we missing anybody? What about UNLV if they beat Boise State? The last couple teams will be interesting.
It’s made for a really great year in college football. With championship week all that remains between us and Bowl Season, and of course, the first time 12 team playoff brackets, it’s sad to see it come to an end; it went by so quickly. Yet, this playoff, and of course, all the bowl games, will be awesome. First up, the 9 league championship games this weekend, and of course, the Army Navy game the next weekend. Loving college football this year…
