I don’t like feeling happy about someone losing their job, but… there are exceptions. The Bears announced today that Matt Eberflus has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Chicago Bears. We can argue over why they waited this long, but why they waited to announce this AFTER he held his regular press conference this morning, just makes me mad. I’m not mad about the firing itself, but doing it this way… it doesn’t reflect well on the organization as a whole. Who wants to be the next head coach of the Bears? Let the search begin…
Finding a good head coach has been almost as hard as finding a good QB for our Bears. When was the last good QB? And please don’t tell me Jay Cutler… When was the last good coach? I could fist bump if you mention Lovie; before then? Ditka. Before then? Doesn’t really matter who was, it really matters who’s next. If the organizational incompetence doesn’t scare them away, then the fact that we have a QB should attract some top level talent. The best thing we can wish for is that this person will proceed hand in hand with Caleb and bring us multiple Super Bowl titles a la Reid and Mahomes. How confident you feeling about that?
Eberflus had to go; enough was simply enough. I was done with him early last year; I had seen enough. However, the way the Bears defense played down the stretch, gave Matt another opportunity IMO. Unfortunately, it turned out all this showed was that Eberflus could coach a defense; he was never cut out for this head coach stuff. Honestly, he appeared to be over his head. This latest gaffe showed this loud and clear, again. Letting the Bears lose this game while just standing there like a deer in headlights. Just like Trubisky and Fields, who should both be able to carve out careers as backup QBs, Eberflus should land on his feet; he can coach a defense. Good luck Flus.
Turning the page… not worried about him any more, just like any other previous coaches or quarterbacks. Wish them well, but it just wasn’t meant to be here in Chicago. Sure, it may have stunted our growth this year, but all that is water under the bridge. From here on out, although this season may be lost, down the stretch, guys should be playing for their jobs NEXT year. No more F-ing around. We may have finally hit on QB; we need to get all of the rest of our shit together now. Maybe we just don’t know how to act… floundering through the past few decades without a QB and 1 good head coach. Now we finally have a QB; now we need a head coach at that level.
I’ve heard the names of the OCs from Detroit and Buffalo; certainly capitalizing on each of their team’s success in both cases. We don’t have the Lions offensive line though, and although I love Caleb and think he’ll be great, he’s not Josh Allen, yet. What about some of the guys that are unemployed? Although I never liked Belicheat… what about Mike Vrabel? This conversation has only just begun.
For now, let’s turn the page on the Eberflus era with this note that I saw from Josh Dubow from the AP news. “221 coaches have had 20+ career games decided by 7 points or fewer. Matt Eberflus’ .227 win percentage in those games ( 5-17) ranks 221st” Enough said. Bear Down.
