November 28, 2024: The Turkey

I’m not a big turkey guy, but when Thanksgiving rolls around… bring it on! This year was no exception. The turkey was really good… bunch of white meat, little dark meat, and of course, plenty of sides… PLENTY of sides. On this Thursday, after stuffing my face, I usually end up somewhere taking a nap; this year was no exception. May have slept 20, 30 minutes… that’s all you need, then it’s dessert time!!! Of course, on this Thanksgiving Day, the first “side” was an appetizer of Bears Lions in Detroit; I told myself I wouldn’t let it ruin my appetite.

Watched the first half at home; could have saved myself that stress on this day. The Lions absolutely manhandled us; to be fair, they’ve been doing that to a lot of teams this year. The Lions will win this division; the Lions may end up winning the whole thing. Still, for being outplayed as bad as we were, being down 16-0 at the half was something to be thankful for. The only question remained was: how bad will this get? I don’t think we could have imagined how bad, and what exactly BAD meant on this turkey day 2024…

We should have known though. I don’t have to review how the season has torpedoed do I? So many crazy ass things have gone against us, it was only fitting that this trend continued. The Bears woke up by the way, and outplayed this best team in the NFL in the 2nd half, thoroughly… which is a good long term sign, I guess; I’m kind of tired of “long term” signs though… it’d be nice for a W, now. And that’s exactly what the Bears had in front of them as they drove down the field as the 4th quarter ticked down. Down by 3 points, the Bears were in striking distance, to not only at the very least tie the game, but WIN the game. Then, it happened. The Bears snatched another loss from the jaws of victory, going backwards, letting time run out (with a timeout in our possession btw), and not even getting a FG attempt off. It was perfectly horrible, this time, in front of the whole country to see.

How does this happen? Well, as we look around the organization for someone to blame, it really comes down to one guy… THE turkey… Matt Eberflus. How do you stand there and let this happen? Sure, you want to blame the rookie QB? OK… he could have done better, no doubt. Yet, seeing this transpire from the sidelines, you couldn’t step up, and call a timeout??? It was inexcusable, and this time, it wasn’t just us Bears fans and the local media who recognized on whom the blame should fall. Eberflus took a beating, rightfully so. He has officially stood past the time where he should have been shown the door; time’s up.

We can take all the good things from this loss we want, just like each of the past 6 losses, although not sure what good we could extract from the Cardinals or Patriots game. Still, there are good things, most importantly, the feeling that we’ve finally found a QB; how long did that take? Well, it’s only a bit more difficult than finding a good coach for this franchise; we may/should be on the search again.
