I’m not even going to get that mad any more. Although we thought this would be the season the Bears make serious strides, and compete for a playoff spot, especially after the way the first 6 games went, this will NOT be the case. However, that does not mean we cannot find any positivity in this season’s happenings. Yes, if there is one thing we can take from this year, and maybe it’s too early to say with 100% confidence, but I think we have found our QB. Let me ask you this: Would you trade another losing season to have finally found our franchise QB? I would.
Caleb Williams looks good, and no, not on that sack in OT; that was a horrible, horrible play. I’d like to think about those couple throws early in the game. I didn’t get to watch the whole game; I missed a lot of the middle of it due to my son’s basketball game… they won again btw. I did watch the first quarter, when those throws that made me smile happened. The first was perfectly fit in this small window between two defenders; he’s done that with some consistency this year. When, outside of a few flukes, have we seen a Bears QB do that with consistency? Caleb looks like he can make these throws with a high success rate, with a lack of mistakes. Do you know the Bears have gone 5 consecutive games without throwing a pick? Last time that happened most people reading this weren’t alive… 1932, when they barely threw the ball. Let’s put this right at the top of our silver linings for this year. Caleb making big time throws while not throwing picks. This isn’t to say he’s not making mistakes. He’s certainly missed some passes that I’m sure he thought he could have completed; he’s certainly taken some sacks he shouldn’t have. He is a rookie… Yet, overall, can’t be too mad at Caleb.
Another great quality is his ability to keep his eyes down the field while he buys himself time. Understanding how pedestrian our offensive line has been, adding in many injuries to that position, he’s had to buy himself time a lot, which has lead him to eventually scramble for yardage too. However, feel like that is the last resort; his eyes are up until he gets to that line of scrimmage. The best throw of the day resulted in one of those plays. I thought he was throwing it away, but no… just before he ran out of bounds, with a defender on his back, Caleb threw it down the sideline, and dropped it into a bucket, again, between two defenders; I should have just turned the game off then. Case closed on the franchise QB search? Whew… I want to say yes… he still is only 11 games into his career; don’t want to crown him yet. Of course, another quality of a franchise QB is leading his team to wins; we may have to wait until next year to see that part of the equation play out.
Yes, the Bears lost again; I am not happy, although it was nice of them to cover the spread for me. Yet, looking at the big picture, remembering all the years we have searched and failed over and over when looking for a franchise QB, I can’t help but to have a small part of happiness inside; did we finally do it? If that answer turns out to be yes, well, then let’s lose out, protect our guy, and get some more high draft picks to put this thing into high gear next year, for the next decade… just a year later than we had hoped. And oh yeah, about the coach… Bear Down!
