November 18, 2024: Pick Me Up

After Sunday’s loss to Green Bay, I certainly needed a pick me up, and, like my son and his 7th grade basketball team have been doing, they came through again on Monday night. It was another big victory for the boys, taking their record to 6-0 for the season. It was specifically a big game for my son, scoring his season high 16 points; he added 4 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 assists. Thank God. What would I do without my son’s basketball team?

It was a road game on a school night, which is always fun, especially one that’s a little bit away dealing with inclement weather. I had quite a day leading up to the evening, but we’re not going to get into that. Bottom line, we jumped in the car and headed out. Typically, we will do a little pregame show in the car, previewing the game at hand. I’ll do some player interviews with my son, a guest interview usually the opposing coach that I will imitate, and maybe some words of wisdom from mom; it’s fun. Sometimes my son may be a little too focused for this charade, but I don’t care… haha. I do it anyways. Anyways, it was an abbreviated version tonight, which really only included me asking if he was ready; he was.

This game was at a school with a really nice gym; it’s pretty big. Definitely bigger than our home court, and night and day compared to gym we played at this past weekend. This past road game, the walls of the gym were like 6 inches from the out of bounds line. Only under one of the baskets, is there any room, which is where the teams’ benches were. This gym on the other hand, has a pretty large bleacher section on one side, and a stage on the other side of the gym; it’s nice, roomy. My son was efficient in his point scoring, hitting 5 of 6 shots inside, and 2 of 6 three point attempts. Maybe the 3 point percentage isn’t that great, but 83% with his 2 point shots is pretty good; the only one he missed was a right handed layup attempt. Still have to work on that off hand…

There’s always something to work on. His defense was very good in this game; that has been a trend with him this year. He’s not a big kid (yet), but he has been getting more physical on defense, bodying up the kid he’s playing; I like it. I guess all those “contact drills” we do in the basement are finally paying off… haha. If he can take contact from this big ass guy, then he’ll be fine, against even the biggest of 7th grade kids. Being able to take the contact removes one barrier which would prevent him from taking it to the hole; I liked that he had some inside baskets in this one. But yeah, his defense… resulted in a handful of steals in this one, one of which ended in a breakaway layup for the boy. Overall, he and his team played a really clean game, which sometimes is tough to do in a blowout situation, but they’ve gotten used to it.

Busy basketball weekend ahead; looking forward to some more “cheering up”, especially if the Bears continue their losing ways. How WILL the Bears respond to another gut wrenching loss?
