Sometimes it’s fun just being a fan; I can’t really do this for MY teams. Yes, any time my teams are involved, it’s about much more than just being a fan; I’ve been told this can make watching a game with me no fun… boo hoo… haha. It’s a passion of mine, you may have guessed. Well, watching my son’s team play, takes it to another level. That’s my mini-me playing out there, the one I spent hours and hours playing with since he was old enough to play; thankfully he liked playing sports. If not, who the hell else am I going to vicariously live through? Yeah, watching him compete is awesome; watching the other teams from his school play… not as intense. Yet, this is where we found ourselves for a couple hours on Saturday. His team was not playing, but we were in the house, watching the rest of the school play bball.
I watch the games, but not as intently; I get to BS, talk to people, check my phone, walk around a bit. I don’t have my eyes glued to every possession, yelling encouragement to the kids, with my head buried in my stat book recording points, rebounds, and everything else. It’s… relaxing. Did I have somewhere better to be on this Saturday afternoon? I guess not, and that’s OK. My son wanted to be there, and pretty much, we do whatever my son wants… haha. He was hanging out with his school mates, including some girls; keep checking in on him with that. It was about 7th grade that I started taking an interest in the opposite sex. Sounds like for now, it’s an us against them mentality, and that’s cool; plenty of time for all that drama.
We watched the 4th graders win; that was a fun game. There were some good kids on both teams; that’s a great age to watch the kids play. The 8th graders were up next, and it didn’t go as well. The team they were supposed to play backed out; the “fill-in” team beat them up, so much so, that I had to mention something to their coach. I walked over and asked him “you have a 7th grade team like this?”… he said yes; maybe a competitive contest will happen yet this year! The 7th grade girls were up next; they took one on the chin. It’s understandable though, with their best player breaking her arm rock climbing a couple weeks ago; it may be tough sledding until she gets back.
It was a relaxing afternoon, no doubt… not that watching my son’s games aren’t relaxing, considering we blow everybody out… haha. Still, a little less at stake when watching a sporting event is cool. Not having to root for my son, or one of my Chicago teams, or a team that I have an “investment” in, is a nice change of pace; need that once in a while. What happened next on Sunday was the complete opposite of this… balance danielson, balance…
