Da da da, da, da… another one bites the dust. Da, da, da… another one bites the dust. And another one’s gone and another one’s gone, another ones bites the dust. Hey, I’m gonna get you too (Eberflus), another one bites the dust. Walking to work on this brisk Tuesday morning, breaking news hit: The Bears have fired OC Shane (why do I want to call him Matt?) Waldron. Well, we had to do something…
A couple weeks ago, the Raiders fired their OC; remember Luke Getsy? Of course we do. I got a text from my die-hard Raiders fan this morning that said Getsy is coming back… haha. A couple months ago, I remember a call into one of the local radio stations here, right after the hiring of Shane Waldron; this fan was from Seattle… the same place we got Waldron from. He said he was horrible; I was hoping he was wrong. Well, turns out he was right… or was he? Just because we canned him, doesn’t mean he’s horrible, does it? Like I said, somebody had to go. To fire an OC 9 games into his stint with a team… whose GM built a shitty ass offensive line that suffered a bunch of injuries… with a coach entering his “one too many” years at his position… did we get the right guy?
I’m going to say no, and by no means is this any defense of Waldron. It’s disappointing Poles built such a great offense but forgot about the offensive line; it’s surprising considering he played the position. Is that a fireable offense? Looking at everything, I’d have to say there’s more good than bad with Poles, but man… this could have been avoided, no? That brings us to Matt Eberflus. 3-14 in 2022, 7-10 in 2023, 4-5 thus far in 2024… 14-29 overall. If you want to argue the Bears roster was crap for his first couple years, OK. If you want to argue that because of his success at coordinating the defense last year, he deserved another shot, OK; this is how I felt. If you were “wowed” with him on Hard Knocks and his new hair do and cute family, then… Anyways, it’s time… I think. With rumors out there that the Detroit Lions OC is interested in the head coaching position here, whew… that’s exciting, especially considering what the Lions have been doing, although… one big difference: the Lions may have the best offensive line in the league. Maybe we should take notes…
If Eberflus is indeed a lame duck coach, then why keep him now? Might as well have made this firing day a package deal, and sent both of them on their way. Unless the rest of the season turns out miraculously, you got to think he’s gone right? Who co-signed for Waldron as OC? Who hired the defensive coordinator that got canned last year? How many decisions has Eberflus had his fingerprints on that has gone south? This has to stand for something. And just like Trubisky and Fields, who both have good chances of making a career of it at backup QB, Eberflus will still have a place in the NFL; he certainly can be a solid defensive coordinator somewhere. But head coach… kind of like our mayor… he’s over his head, big time. Let’s not drag this out 2 more years…
