That was quick. So all the rumors were all true. The Bulls hire Fred Hoiberg as their new head coach.
We’ve been hearing about the Thibs riff all year. We’ve been hearing about the Hoiberg rumors all year. Where there is smoke, there is fire. In two consecutive days, both of these year long stories played out.
I don’t get it. Well, I guess I do somewhat. The Bulls front office wanted somebody who they can mold…someone that will listen to them…someone to coach the way they want the team coached. I guess you can say a Yes Man. What is the purpose of hiring a coach like this?
Well, maybe they look around the league, and see the success of guys like this. Eric Spolestra. David Blatt. It’s not necessarily the choice of coach here, it’s the fact that they have the best player in the league. So hiring somebody like this doesn’t mean anything to me…it doesn’t equal any comparable future success because we don’t have that guy playing for us.
How about the pairing of a guy like this on the court with a great coach? Red Auerbach. Pat Riley. Phil Jackson. You have some of the best all time teams. That is the true formula to success. This is where the Bulls went wrong.

They already had a great coach. Somebody when paired with superstars could equal greatness. We didn’t need the change at coach. We needed the superstars on this team to get to that next level. Rose couldn’t because of his injuries. Butler is just beginning to blossom…hopefully we see this continue with him in a Bulls uniform. It was supposed to have all come together by now, but it didn’t. And the Bulls made the choice they thought they had to make.
Reading some other articles about it, and some stats that are kept, shows Thibs as one of the best at getting the most out of a roster. Well, we all knew that. These numbers prove it out. Check ESPN for that article. It just makes me sick.
So now we bring in a guy with zero NBA experience, essentially starting over. We bring in a guy that may be great for a young team trying to figure things out…not for a team seemingly on the brink of success. This is the type of guy you dismiss when the team gets to this point, a la Doug Collins back in the late 80s, or Vinny Del Negro prior to Thibs, or Denis Savard prior to Q, or Rick Renteria prior to Maddon, or Robin Ventura prior to…. You get my point?
Hey, I’ll be rooting for him for sure. Maybe he surprises. Maybe by some stroke of luck this guy with no NBA experience leads an experienced high quality team to the next level…or maybe not. Maybe after this 4th coach hired by this regime, maybe it’s time for a change elsewhere in the organization. Maybe although they do OK with player decisions (minus the trading of LaMarcus Aldridge of course for starters), they have no clue how to hire a good NBA coach. Oh wait… They actually DID get it right on the third try, but they messed that up. Now here comes number (my iPhone corrected my misspelling of number to blunder) four. How excited are we Bulls fans? Hello Hoiberg.
