September 4, 2024: A Losing Proposition

I will never forget the first over/under win total for the season bet I made in baseball; it may go down as the worst bet I ever made. Yes, I bet on the 2024 Chicago White Sox to go OVER their win total for the year. At the time, I thought they couldn’t be THAT bad. I mean, all they had to do was win 62 games, and I would cash the ticket. They could lose 100 games, and I would STILL win! Well, the Sox may not win 40 games this year. They are on track to be the worst all time team in baseball history.

Have you watched them play at all lately? Well, I tuned in a bit on Tuesday night, when the Sox took on the Orioles in Baltimore. They were losing, of course, but then a play happened that could have summed up the whole year. From the highlights (lowlights) that I’ve seen, there have been plenty of them. Eloy Jimenez was up with the bases loaded; remember him? Oh yeah, the guy the Cubs traded to the Sox for Quintana back in the day; all we heard was how the Sox won that trade; Eloy did hit a memorable home run against the Cubs in Wrigley during a cross-town series. Well, he couldn’t stay healthy, and was moved to Baltimore earlier this year; lucky him. Anyways, he hits a lazy, shallow fly ball to left field. As Benintendi came in to make the play, the third base man peeled off; the shortstop did not. He laid out for the ball, planting his face against Benintendi’s elbow, causing the ball to fall out of his glove to the ground; all three guys scored, and the Sox SS had a shiner. I can’t believe how bad the Sox are.

They’re historically bad; maybe I should take my son to a game before the season is out to say we watched this team play in person? How can a major league baseball team be THIS bad? It’s flat out embarrassing. Whenever I see someone walking around town with a Sox hat on, I just shake my head; God bless them… what a horrible, horrible season. The best thing about it, is there is nowhere to go but UP for next season, seriously. They can’t possibly be worse. Selling point for the next discount manager they try to bring in…

I don’t like to kick a team when they’re down; they’re having a bad enough time without me piling on. I don’t even mention it when I talk to my buddies who are Sox fans. I mean, they have lost 45 of their last 50 games; that’s no typo. That flat out defies logic. The Sox are bound to win at some point, right…. right??? Well, pride has to kick in, no? These are professional ball players that are getting beat like a dead horse night in night out. At what point do they sack up and win a game? You did see a little fire later in this game, when their interim manager and another player got booted out of the game. Is it finally time they get another W? Well… it may be a losing proposition, but I’m betting on it. I just never learn… Go Sox?
