August 9, 2024: Meaningful Football

Depending on how long you’ve been reading here, you may know how I feel about preseason football. For the most part, it’s meaningless. Well, enter BETTING on preseason football; all of a sudden, it has become meaningful football. Amazing how that works. There have been other spots where it means a bit more, like when the Bears are rolling out their next franchise QB to be. I was excited to see Fields play for the first time; he’ll be taking snaps for the Steelers tonight. Of course, I’m excited to see Caleb take the field tomorrow vs the Bills. Other than that though… just remember, the 85 Bears went 1-3 in the preseason.

Back to the betting… I think preseason football offers a great opportunity to make money. More so than the “scripted” regular season, with the many more millions of dollars wagered on each game, your research can really pay off. I’ve had success in the past in the preseason, only to give it back during the regular season. Maybe because of my history, I should bet MORE on the preseason. Well, it’s been about 6 weeks since I’ve done any betting. I did win on the As over the Sox for their 21st straight loss, and I did win on the Bears in the HOF game… oh yeah, but the bet was wiped away because the game wasn’t official because it was called in the 3rd quarter… BS! Haha… Other than those two bets, nothing since the Stanley Cup; that is all about to change.

I’ve rested up, taken a break, for many reasons, but now, am raring to go. Thursday night brought the official Week 1 of the preseason; I went 2-0. I stuck to my discipline and only wagered one unit on each game, but 2-0 is 2-0. Big thing is QB depth; Giants had that over the Lions. Motivation. Lions beat the Giants last year in preseason; Giants looking for a bounce back season, while the Lions (Yes, the Lions!) are like, wake me when the playoffs begin. Then it was on to the Pats Panthers game; I absolutely loved this game. I initially saw it at -3.5 I think; when I went to make my bet, the line was up to -6.5… I thought twice… waited… line was up to -7 even money; I still grabbed it. I loved it that much, but still only for 1 unit. Pats wasted the Panthers; they’ll both suck this year IMO, but the Pats are a great preseason team due to the roster full of serviceable QBs, and the Panthers… with Andy Dalton hurt, got nada. Plus, new coach at home… maybe play Panthers later this preseason due to that angle? Probably not.

Onto this weekend. I’ve zeroed in a few more games. Like the Texans -2.5 at the Steelers; no Russ, only Fields for a bit vs the Texans decent QB depth, plus it’s their 2nd preseason game. Got the Commanders -3 at the Jets, Browns -4 over the Pack, and Titans -5.5 over the Niners. May pull the trigger on some other ones… Want to take the Bears, but Trubisky on the Bills… why do I have a feeling that he’ll do well? Haha…

Read some articles on each team. Look at the QB depth. Listen to what the coaches say. There are no guarantees, but you too may make money in the NFL preseason. Good luck!
