Courage. Resoluteness. Endurance. A politically correct term for guts. Some of us got it, some of us don’t. Some of our teams got it, some of them don’t. The ones that don’t…they fade away into the abyss with most teams. The ones that do have it…they’re remembered forever.
Who had it? First team lead by this guy comes to mind. I think of a specific game in the NBA finals. They call it the Flu Game. As they show highlights of this game on YouTube, and my son asks is Michael Jordan sick, I say yes, but he still did this…he still did that. It wasn’t just the flu game, although that is the most well known. He did this on the regular, that is, play through any kind of ailments both regular season and postseason…heck, even in the preseason. Yeah, not many like that any more. We look at our current Bulls team, with the current superstar (Derrick Rose I mean), he just doesn’t seem to have it. Injuries have taken a toll, yes, but carefully managing his career seems to be his top priority. I’m finally going to start talking about the Bulls again…
What about our baseball teams? The Sox had what it took 10 years ago to grab their one title of a lifetime, while the Cubs have failed over and over. Curses, schmurses… It’s about having what it takes when it’s all on the line, and the Cubs have fell miserably short too many times. Which team will muster it up to give us another World Series title?
Ok, so we have to mention the Bears too. Talk about the total opposite of this blog title, and you can talk about the 2014 Chicago Bears. While that Super Bowl title seems further away than ever now, the 1985 Bears get more and more cherished.

That brings us to the team that currently personifies guts. The Chicago Blackhawks continue to carry this flag for our city. This current series is shaping up to be an all timer. How many teams would be able to rebound from giving up 3 goals in 37 seconds…at home..in the playoffs…in the 3rd period? I’ll say none. None other than our Hawks. To play all this sudden death hockey, you got to have balls of steel. As a fan, it’s sea sickening. To the players, living it, breathing it… I have the utmost respect for those guys. The Ducks are no slouches either. When two teams like this run into each other, what decides it? The will to win as Toews puts it. Gotta wanna as my dad puts it. Intestinal Fortitude is what I call it.
So far we’ve talked all about our teams. This is of course a website about Chicago sports, so naturally, duh! But this term can be used to describe the individuals that today is all about. The ultimate thanks and respect goes to all the vets out there. Let’s remember the ones who didn’t make it, and thank the ones that did, and continue to do so. I guess that would be the true definition of that term up there. I can’t pretend to know about that.
I do know a little it about this sports stuff, so I’ll stick to that. Who else has what it takes? We always look forward to that next guy, that next team, that will make us love them. Let’s look at a team that has it. Let’s cherish these guys. Will they have what it takes once more? Happy Memorial Day and Go Hawks!

Happy Memorial Day! Thanks to all the vets from the past, now, and in the future!
MJ one of a kind…never before, never seen again…no comparisons…PERIOD.
85 Bears had that something, too. Knew they were good and showed it.
Hawks have proved they have what it takes twice before. Trying to do it again this year. Classic series through 4 games, and I can only imagine what is to come. 7th and deciding game sounds about right, but I hope the Hawks can win tonight and close it out at home. One game at a time, starting tonight…big balls time Hawks…show the ducks how it is done!
GO HAWKS!!!

I’m just glad I was around to witness and celebrate a world championship with all the major Chicago sports teams. 85 Bears, 90s Bulls, 98 Fire, 05 Sox, and most recently the Blackhawks.
