June 30, 2024: Uno

On the way down to the DR, I slept… and it was everything I thought it would be. My wife and son both watched movies, and I knocked out. On the way back, I stood up for most of the flight. My wife and son switched seats, which setup a multiple hour card session between me and the boy. From go fish, to blackjack, to poker, to rummy, and finally Uno; it was a one on one battle. The game we really settled on was Uno.

We have this oversize deck of Uno cards, which is what he brought on this vacation. These cards are like the size of your head; just imagine when you get a bunch of cards in your hand. The stewardesses both commented that they were so big, they would be able to play, because they could actually see them; they are huge! My son likes to play this other variety of Uno; he calls it Stacks. You can throw down multiple cards at the same time, like if you have three 3s… different colors…. don’t matter, throw them all down as long as the first one matches the card shown. Where it gets tricky is with Draw 2s and 4s… you can stack on top of that, and turn around one of those cards. If I give my son a Draw 4, and he has one in his hand, he can throw his right on top, and now I have to draw 8; yeah, I like it. I had like 16 cards in my hand… haha. I swear he beat me like 8 straight hands, then I finally started to turn it around, and then he wanted to stop playing… haha… sore loser. All and all, we were probably about even… or at least I’d like to think I got back.

As we landed, the first thing on our minds was to check the final score of our playoff baseball game; I handed my son the phone. He refreshed; the look on his face said it all. We had lost the game… by 1 run… walkoff style, in the bottom of the 7th inning… pain. He was so disappointed; I was too. One game away from being in the championship; it hurt. I browsed through Game Changer; it gets worse. We lost on a wild pitch, where the runner scored from 3rd base; ouch! They scored their last 2 runs in that variety! It was a nail biter as I suspected; with a game this close, the little things stand out a bit more.

I talked to both coaches the next day to get the low down about the game. I guess we ran into some outs on the base paths too; those little things add up. Yet, we were right there; we were THIS close to getting to the end of the road. A top 4 finish out of 15 teams is still nothing to hang your head about. I just wanted to get back on that field one more time; I know my son wanted to play another game. It wasn’t meant to be. Still, a really good season across the board. Congrats Giants!
