June 25, 2024: Taking a Pause

With the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Finals, it was time to take a break from sports gambling. It’s been quite the roller coaster. Starting back at it about a year and a half ago, I slowly pulled out ahead… building my small bankroll at an equally slow pace. If $5 was 1 unit, I was up about 40 units after the first year back in the game; yeah! Earlier this year, I went on an absolute heater… tripling my bankroll; that must have been that slow trek up that initial hill in the roller coaster. Once I reached that peak, it was a long ride back down to reality. After the dust cleared after Game 7 of the Cup, I was almost back to where I started at the end of my first year; currently I sit about 46 units up since my return. It sucks about my slide and all, but to still be up a good amount after 18 months, I’ll take it. I got back my initial investment and haven’t dipped back for more; that’s not quite the career (yet) I was shooting for, but it’s still a win in my book.

As far as the Cup Finals went, I had bet on the Stars to win it; that was a loser. I also had a bet on the Western Conference to win the Finals, so the comeback from 3-0 down by the Oilers had be excited. Thankfully, not too excited where I couldn’t hedge in Game 7, ensuring I would win something. So yeah, took the Panthers to win Game 7 straight up. I still would have preferred the Oilers winning, it would have cashed me a bit more, but Florida winning still gave me some dough. So… it was a decent ending to a rough playoff season in both the NBA and NHL. It’s a good time to take a pause.

I do still have some long term bets pending, but not a whole lot of promise. I have Kris Bryant over 19.5 home runs; poor guy has been on the IL most of the year. What I thought was a low total for someone like KB hitting in Coors, is turning out to be more than enough; slim chance of winning that one. I have an even slimmer chance of winning my other HR bet. Luis Robert over 29.5 home runs isn’t looking good. Of course, he missed more than a month of the season too. He has been hitting some dingers, but he’s way behind the 8 ball on hitting this total. My next bet is probably my worst bet, over the win total of 61.5 for the White Sox. Yeah, in my stupid head I thought this would help me NOT root against the Sox, but instead has made me hate them worse. They’re the worst team in baseball, and it ain’t close. This is a lost bet. My final long term play is my best chance to cash; I have the Pirates making the playoffs. I’m still not looking great, but at least I have a fighting chance here. So yeah, my long term plays in general, haven’t been good. I may be placing some units on NFL win totals soon; we’ll get to that.

In the meantime, it’s a good time to take a break. I do want to see if my MLB trends from last year are hitting, but just haven’t had time; maybe after the All Star break. But yeah, haven’t even been looking to make a bet; just lost the feeling. I’m sure the NFL will help bring it back though…
