More comebacks… we already had MJ coming back from retirement, the Bills Oilers playoff game from back in the day, and the Cubs down 3-1 to the Indians in the World Series. Now what?
I remember some comebacks the wrong way… one that comes to mind was a Bulls Kings game I took my wife to back in the day. We were fighting, don’t know about what, probably something stupid; it was right before Christmas. I was at work… I remember at the time, I was sitting at a desk in this weird location… I was on the phone, scoring a great deal on some Bulls tickets. I mean, we were sitting right behind the Bulls bench, our best seats ever. The Bulls, with Vinny Del Negro as their coach, were kicking the Kings’ asses. This was great, and then… it wasn’t. The Kings had to be down like 30 points in the 3rd quarter, late in the 3rd; it didn’t matter. We saw an epic collapse up close and personal… brutal. Sticking with the Bulls… how about Derrick Rose’s comeback? Yeah, he and Adidas had a whole advertisement campaign about it; Adidas hoped to get some of those millions back after Rose got hurt. I remember my son had the first Derrick Rose gym shoes; they were pretty sweet. The commercials certainly got you pumped up, but the reality… not so much. Derrick was never the same player, and after continuing to sit out after the doctors had cleared him, some of the sympathy and compassion was being washed away. With those Bulls in another playoff run, meeting up with the Heat, again, we could have used him. He watched from the bench, as the Bulls were eliminated again. Not getting a 7th ring with that Bulls team was hurtful.
How about the 28-3 Super Bowl comeback? That one pops to mind. I know some folks in Atlanta, and man… talk about heartbroken. Can you imagine? You’re having a party for the big game, and you’re kicking ass… the drinks are flowing, you’re whooping it up… the game is over; the Falcons have finally won a Super Bowl. Then, the bottom dropped out. I was upset too, not as upset as a Falcons fan, but I hated the Patriots… WAY too much winning for one team for my liking. I remember the Cubs coming back in an early season game at Wrigley some years back. I was watching that one… we were down like 8-1 and came back and won. At what point do you leave a game that you’re at? Well, the best answer is never… but, if you had to for whatever reason, I’d rather leave if my team was UP big… that way, if it turns out to be a game, and in this case, an epic collapse, you weren’t there for it. However, if you leave, and your team was DOWN big, and they comeback and win… damn, you’ll never live that one down. You were there for one of the biggest comebacks ever; how cool! Wait, what… you left? You idiot!!! Haha… I can’t say I have an experience that qualifies for either of those, since, you know, I don’t leave early. But one comeback that I saw in person comes to mind. It was topped off by an Aramis Ramirez grand slam against the Phillies… I think it was 2003? Anyways, seeing your team come back in person… hell yeah! That’s the best.
