It was very nice when my wife’s family wanted to take our son to Disney as his birthday gift; he would be there with his cousins, celebrating his younger cousin’s birthday… their birthdays are a month apart. Of course, the dates had to line up with his spring break, and… they did! After getting out of school on Thursday, we took him directly to the airport. He would be there over Easter, returning on Tuesday, just before his birthday; we couldn’t be apart from him on his birthday… It was hard enough to be away from him for this amount of time, although we did get a taste of that last year, when he went to sleep away camp for a week. We dropped him off at the airport, and watched him line up to check in his bags… see you in 5 days…
Now that my son was going to be away, having tons of fun in Disney, what would Mom and Dad do? Well, my first thought was Vegas… what else is new? Haha… It would be our wedding anniversary on Easter Sunday this year… what better place to go? Thankfully, my wife loves Vegas too. After all, we do head out there every year to see her Dad, a nice bonus from going to the city in the desert. So yeah, we reserved our trip; I was very excited to say the least. We left on Saturday, and were picked up at the airport by her Dad. He said, where’s my grandson??? Haha… he knew he wouldn’t be there this time, but yes, somebody was missing. As we checked into our room, we definitely felt it. The last 10 or so times we’ve been to Vegas, he’s been there with us. This time… only me and my wife… kind of like the 10 or so times before my son was born. Yes, it would be a throwback trip; like I said, I was excited.
We weren’t throwing it back to my original trip to Vegas with my Dad, or the many trips with the boys; maybe for my 50th birthday… haha. No, this would be a throwback to when my wife and I lived out in LA, and would drive through the desert every couple months to hang out in Vegas for a few days; it was so much fun. I still remember those days… Reserving the rental car, picking it up Saturday morning, flying down the 15, stopping for some breakfast, checking in early, and away we go!!! We did learn that leaving on Friday night wasn’t a good thing; we also learned that coming back from Vegas on Sunday afternoon wasn’t smart either. This time though, we wouldn’t have to deal with any of that traffic… but that wouldn’t be the best part about this visit.
It was some US time; that’s it… that would be the absolute best part about this. Our son is the center of our universe and we wouldn’t change that for a minute. Yet, the “masters” of that universe, need to take care of themselves too. This trip would be a much needed recharge of the batteries, a boost of the relationship where this all began. Yeah, it really didn’t matter what we had planned, or what we did over the next few days, the best part about it, was being there with my wife… I couldn’t believe it was just her and I. This was going to be fun… the return of the couple back to Vegas… let’s go!
